Playing this game is a defining core memory for me. This game has an atmosphere about it that I've never found in any other game before. It might not be the best game to ever exist, but I promise that if you play it, it'll stay in your memory forever with its Tolkien charms. The early CGI cut scenes can be almost laughable at times, especially with the more cartoony style they were going for, but the models are still good in that early-2000's sort of way. On top of that, the gameplay was simple, yet very satisfying between the platforming, chest unlocking minigames, and trying to fight or hide from enemies as the young hobbit you are. The gameplay style reminds me a lot of N64 era Zelda games which was and still is a pretty hard to beat formula for a good game (maybe mixed with a little PlayStation Harry Potter). Additionally, the music and ambience really tie it all together; the music from Hobbiton still live rent free in my head to this day.
I think whether you're playing through rose-colored nostalgia glasses, or trying the game for the first time, you're bound to have a ton of fun even if it isn't your next favorite game. While there's plenty of games that need GOG's preservation efforts, The Hobbit really deserves to be one of them despite not being one of the better known games.

This was MY game growing up. Everytime I went to Grandma's house, I would excitedly go to her computer and stroll through Middle-Earth, taking in the sights and sounds that I still remember to this day. The Mirkwood level was very difficult for me, since I was (and still am) scared of those gigantic spiders. However, getting past that level and finally reaching a new section of the game was invigorating! Even if the next level had more spiders. The Erebor sections were genuinely fun and tense, with solid puzzles. The Misty Mountains levels are my favorite though. It's too bad that I cannot find this game anywhere else besides pirating websites. If someone were to list this properly, I would buy it in an instant.
Such an underrated gem that deserves preservation! I still remember buying it for the PS2 at some market when I was 8. The aesthetic and atmosphere of this game is incredible, especially the soundtrack my god, the Shire theme still lives rent free in my head after all these years.
Growing up as a PC gamer in the 2000s, this was *the* 3D adventure game for me. Nintendo had Mario and Zelda, Playstation had Spyro and Sly Cooper and others, while we had this. Not as widely known as the others but I still remember it fondly.
I'm going to post this here because I've held onto this useless knowledge for years. Every old text-format completionist guide (pre-youtube days) I ever saw for this game would mention secret areas or hidden gem "courage point" collectibles (like hopping on all the lilypads in that section of the shire level without falling off) but none of them, nor any other such guide elsewhere I saw EVER mentioned that on the last level, if while talking to one of the elves in the camp at the start (standing under a tent iirc), if you spammed the enter key to initiate dialogue like 10-15 times you would randomly be awarded a crazy amount of white courage points (the best ones). It ONLY works once, and on that specific NPC. I tested it. There was no courage point cap for that level due to a section where you can earn infinite gems by fighting and not progressing, so i guess it never got found?? Because really who would think to spam the dialogue button for that specific NPC in that specific area of that level? But don't worry devs, if you're out there. I was a kid, but I found it.
This was one of my favorite platformers on the PS2! Not only is it a fun platforming adventure (sure, it's no Banjo or Mario, but holds up quite well), it's a rare time capsule of how Tolkien's works were adapted BEFORE the incredible movies shaped all future takes on Middle-Earth. Is this quirky? Yes. Is it kinda campy? Absolutely. Does it rule because of these very things? Yes! This is a game that deserves preservation for both a fun look at a lesser-known platformer and a glimpse at the pre-Jackson LOTR adaptations in games.
Diese wunderbare Reise definiert meine Kindheit.. seitdem spiele ich es bis zum Erwachsenen jedes Jahr mindestens 2x komplett durch und versuche alles neu zu entdecken und alles (Edelsteine/Mutpunkte, Kampftaktiken und Gold) einzusammeln. Meine Freunde und ich sehnen uns schon seit Jahren danach, dass dieses Spiel endlich für die Ewigkeit in die digitale GOG Bibliothek aufgenommen wird. Bitte bitte nehmt diese LOTR Vorgeschichte mit auf, sodass sie nicht in Vergessenheit gerät! Dieses Spiel ist soooo viel besser als alles andere was man je gespielt hat! Und ich habe schon sehr viel gespielt in allen Genre, und alle AAA neuen Spiele... kein Spiel spiele ich seit Jahrzehnten so oft wieder wie diesen alte Klassiker!! Ich hoffe allen Herr der Ringe und Hobbit Fans geht es genauso, votet somit auch up! :)
FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival.
Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed.
The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo.
As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity.
Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control.
