Valis was one of the early examples of a series of games trying to tell a vivid story in the gaming media, something that was very rare back in the day. Rather than trying to make the sort of cookie-cutter game tropes, they went full-on anime, in this case magical girl anime, and while it was hokey AF at times (this was the early 90s, after all!), the characters often felt like actual characters, and the Japanese voicework was top-notch. This is the sort of thing that was only rivaled by Tecmo's NES Ninja Gaiden games, and deserves a spot here, where it can be remembered and preserved. This is especially important as this is the first and only time that the original Valis IV or the Super CD remake of the original game were released in English (Super Valis IV for the SNES had none of the story and was heavily cut compared to the PC-Engine original here in the collection, while older versions of Valis I are covered in Valis Collection II and III).
