I started gaming with the Westwood RTS games, and this one was... different. So very different.
The player is forced to take action, bring the fight to the enemy. Economy is directly tied to how much of the map you can hold. It is possible to slow production, or even steal enemy units, by taking the right territory at the right time. Infantry had real value in this game, despite being very vulnerable. Rifle fire could clean out tank and gun emplacement crews, permitting any infantry to take over enemy equipment. the ability to swim opened up new paths. And the AI used all of this properly. There was a bit of luck and random in all this, but it fit well with the madness and over the top feel of the game. As such, this game is a hidden gem of RTS that can still hold up to modern day games in terms of innovation and intelligent gameplay.
