*Spoilers for the Shadow Thiefs storyline*

I've been playing BG2 for a few days now, and spent a hell of a lot of hours on it. Early on I encountered the crash that happens when you try to create a new point on the map. It happened with or without the widescreen mod, so I didn't manage to fix it. I ignored it and just decided to not use that feature.

Now, this seems related to my new problem, because after I have killed Mae've, I am offered to take over the guild, and I accepted. I suspect this made the map marker change its name, and now the game crashes with a runtime error every time I try to open the map in the docks.

Unfortunately, I've been a little lazy with saving today, so I only had two saves (quick and auto), both of which were after taking over the guild. It only happens when opening the map when I'm outside in the docks district, not when I'm in any building or any other districts or places.

I don't really want to start anew considering the amount of hours I've put in so far, since I've been doing a lot of side quests and postponing the main questline.

Is there any way to fix this, or should I just prepare myself mentally to never again use the ingame outdoor map for the docks district until I've finished this playthrough?

Are you saying that you had the widescreen mod installed, and then uninstalled it and continued on with the same game?
Because you can't do that, once you save the game at a widescreen resolution, you can't change the resolution or uninstall the mod without starting a new game.

I can't remember if I started the new game with or without the widescreen mod, but it doesn't work in any case. It doesn't seem to matter wether I have the mod installed or not, the error is the same.

I have a pretty big screen and prefer the game to look as close to the original intention as possible, so I play it in 1024*768, stretched while keeping aspect ratio (black bars on the side). It looks decent enough. Because of my preference in resolution, I don't really need the widescreen mod, since the original BGConfig.exe can force it to that resolution. But the error is the same, wether I use the widescreen mod or remove the widescreen installation and use BGConfig to set the resolution.

And as I said, it's not important to be able to create map markers, but I have a feeling that if I can fix that problem, the new problem will be fixed too.

Any other mods?

I don't think there's an easy way to fix it. Seems like area is corrupted. You could try tinkering with NearInfinity, but it requires a lot of knowledge about Infinity engine file structure, and the result is not guaranteed. I'd just leave it at that.

I believe I kept it to the bare essentials, but either way I just decided to make seperate saves more frequently and not rely on just the quick save. I'm also so close to the ending now (chapter 6), so it's not that important. It's just that one map, so I'll survive through the rest of the game.

I think I found out the reason why it crashes.

When you take over the rival Thieves Guild, it's supposed to change the name (on the Docks Map) to (player_name) Guild but for some reason, the game doesn't remove the OLD name of the guild so both names appears in the same space. This probably causes some kind of error/overflow/conflict and crashes out the Map view of the game.

There was a minor fix to this issue, which was to run the game in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode, view the map, then SAVE the game - then click compatibility off, which is how I saw the names were doubled up.
