Dogmaus: I'll start with today's Star Wars Battlefront II free on Epic. I heard bad things about its multiplayer and monetization, but do you know if it's worth playing solo?

MysterD: SP campaign is fun & good, IMHO.

Bought & played it quite a bit ago, way before the Epic Giveaway.

Loaded with variety of gameplay, despite not being super-long. Expect it to be 5-10 hours, or so.

I really liked Iden's arc; she's cool and is voiced by Janina Gavankar (from True Blood). Also ,you get to play as other important characters from the SW Universe - as their stories and sections overlap w/ Iden's.

Some of the iconic characters and their missions: they have different mechanics and/or gameplay types. Keeps the gameplay fun and fresh.

Just...you know, don't expect this to have the level of writing, narrative, dialogue, and whatnot as say a KOTOR 1+2.
Thanks! Given that's not too long I could give it a shot!
I loved free rebel galaxy from Epic. DRM free to boot :) Total War Troy was also a nice give-away, I love TW series ever since the first Shogun :) AC syndicate was also very nice, love the AC series, just couldn't buy that game before Epic giveaway because of god awful language restrictions for my country

Tallima: I have to GOG The Long Dark. It was interesting but incomplete, so I set it aside.
You may not be aware, that while the game is no longer available here, GOG did still get updates for it .... though to this day I have never received a notification about them, and only found out when someone here mentioned it in another topic.

Which reminds me, I should check for more.

Lots of new stuff and completions has been added in those updates.

Thank you for the heads up on that!
I'm happy for new people to try Dandara, a very enjoyable metroidvania with a unique moving technique. I would like to see how it works on a touch screen now that I have a (somewhat working) tablet. Next week's is a double, but not the one I wanted, Axiom Verge. I feel like when hitting always water in battleship aound a one quare ship. They keep giving away anyother game twice than those I've missed! XD

Dandara? Yep, you can be lost at times but always have a map so you know what areas are still to be visited
I found the exploration rewarding and the mid to end game challenging and satisfying!

Epic has confirmed that the free games program will go on for the rest of the current year.
And they are talking about adding achievements to profiles.

yep, and it was given already on Epic, and it will be given away a second time next week. It's probably a way to generate a fan base for the second game coming later in Fall 2021

Good news I guess.

Going by the numbers mentioned in that article, they seem to be doing well, and maybe that is because of all the free games driving gamers to their shore. It would have to be impacting Steam and others, including alas GOG, which is maybe why GOG and Epic have their deal going. I don't think it was Epic's intent to harm other stores, just the natural fallout of their war against Steam.

---------------------------------------

Talking about free games, I am not that enamored with Game Giveaway Of The Day. The fact that you need to install and register in the time period mentioned (usually 24 hours from when it is listed), makes it very onerous, especially as you cannot re-install outside of that period.

That said, many of the games given away are pretty crap, and only half of the games provided seem to have that install requirement ... certainly only about half have that encrypted Setup.gcd file. Of course, there is a program you can use during the register period, that actually extracts the real installer, which allows you to then install whenever, and it even works for most of the game downloads after they have expired ... it can be tricky to get working though due to AV.

They have Fortnite and the other money eating games, several exclusives, but for sure the giveaways have taken a lot of people on the platform. Many freeloaders like myself, but some spending ones as well of course.
I agree with you about GotD - I stopped caring for giveaway of the day because the quality is really low generally, and the activation method is not worth the effort. Some games are not even worth of being permanently free on itch.io, at best it's Alawar stuff you can get on Big Fish with a free game code. Their Android giveaways are better because they're just a Google Play link to the free game, but I don't see great games there either.
