AB2012: So exactly how far reaching is this problem? Has anyone here with an AMD card using those DX9-breaking drivers tested more game than those shown in that Reddit thread? What about:-

- DX9 GOG titles (eg, FEAR, Oblivion, Dragon Age Origins, The Cat Lady, Torchlight, This War of Mine, QUBE, ShadowRun Returns, etc)?

- DX7-8 titles upgraded to use DX9 renderers (eg, TafferPatched Thief 1-2)?

- DX7-8 titles (eg, Giants Citizens Kabuto, NOLF 1-2, etc)?

- 2D DDraw titles (eg, Age of Empires 1-2 (retail), Commandos BEL, Diablo 2, etc)?

"AMD Ray"'s forum response was not very impressive either way...
Quickly checked, This war of mine works fine for me on Adrenalin.

RWarehall: To be fair, the 580 is price and performance comparable to the 1060. That seems to be the sweet spot for AMD right now.

As to the driver issue, I imagine that was merely a rash response from a forum moderator, and shouldn't be taken is an actual response in regards to AMD's plans. I suspect he thought he was being helpful in saying that AMD was not going to fix or track down a single isolated bug that affects just a single old game. Of course with the issue more widespread, they will be forced to find a fix.

Of course as I say that, with my R9 290 dying a couple weeks ago with artifacting issues which from reports seems to be a common problem with certain AMD cards (my 1st video card to actually die as opposed of becoming obsolete), I've decided to give NVIDIA the nod this time with my new system coming this month. Was planning to upgrade in another year, but a year early isn't too bad. I've always been a bit worried about the power consumption and higher temperatures put out by AMD cards, and question how much this affects their longevity. Guess we'll see with the new system.
True some cards can run a bit warm, but some are cool stuff.
My XFX RX480 GTR XXX runs at 39c idling with the fans off (they only turn on when needed). Just did an hour of Dying Light & temp's max'd at 55c, so plenty of room to spare 8)

Magnitus:
I fully agree. This is what has stopped me from buying a GPU for more then 10 years. I am a Linux user and simply can not find a satisfatory GPU which works well and suport open-sourcing drivers. And the way the things are going I think I will not get a GPU so soon

Magnitus: ,,,
With GPUs, you got a preferential treatment for Windows with directX, a general lack of driver standardization across GPUs (definitely not plug&play) and a general resistance toward open-sourcing drivers in general.
I am using AMD opensource driver across multiple cards in Linux for ages. It IS plug and play, but the issue is DirectX! Driver performance is OKAY. It is API that holds things!

If you bypass DirectX in Wine via Gallium Nine, then you get 100% performance. With suboptimal API translation like Wine, you can get only 33%.

I am 100% with AMD here. Direct X must rot for good! Invest in Vulkan and push proprietary API through translation layers. People who support DirectX should understand that by doing that they are essentially contributing themselves to own lockin OS-wise.

johnnygoging: so what the fuck are you supposed to do with an AMD card if you want to play a DX9 game?

games hardware fucking sucks.
Port Wine and wrap it! The modern titles should all use only one crossplatform API - Vulkan for your own good.

If your artifacts look like polygon mess/stretching, it could be bad substrate and you should think about getting it professionally reballed (GPU reballing). Its issue that hits all large GPUs since at least Nvidia Geforce 256.

Yeah, it's always good to give your GPU a solid reballing. You might want to think about reballing it again the next morning.

I'm sorry, deep down I'm just a child ;)
Excellent! I'm sure they always would have, but the putting some heat under their ass made it a priority one! Not many times those 10 year old games get priority one engineering treatment :)

RA3 seems to crash when I start Skirmish
Try different versions.

Some will probably work.

Excellent! Thank you everyone for your help. I'm sure all of us collectively commenting about the issue on various forums is what helped encourage AMD to change their opinion and fix the issue.
I was thinking about a full AMD setup the next time I build one.
Better to think about it twice :P
Thanks for the advice.
Holy cow.Read the tilte of this thread and though "Here we go again......",but luckily got relieved when i read they are working on it.Some of the best games were made during the DX 9 era,so let's keep it running as long we can ;).Cheers

apehater: interesting, although being a amd cpu user mostly (amd k6, amd xp, intel c2d, amd phenom2, amd phenom2 x6 and now ryzen), i used so far only nvidia gfx as there was always some trouble with amd cards. nvidia cards are always more compatible and better optimized. i thought that this time was over by now and planned to get a new amd gfx, but now nvidia it will be again.

tfishell: Don't you mean "THIS IS ALL GOG'S FAULT!!!""?
yeah you're right it probably is. and by the way trump is gog's fault too
Sadly GOG does not allow me to change the thread title, but I made sure to point out that AMD are working on a fix right at the beginning.

They initially did give the impression they didn't care but that was a very bad PR move of them and they deserved the lashback. They should have just stated "we are looking at it, please downgrade for now" or similar.

As soon as the new driver is out and confirmed to fix the problems, I'll update the OP again.
It will be terrible if by the time new APU (2018 Raven Ridge?) launched, the driver still broke.

APU supposed to be fine for old game in 720p, especially HTPC or casual gamer.
