But when I click 'connect' it takes me to the redeem code page...so I can't connect or play any multiplayer game....anyone else have this?

It sounds very much like you're logged into an account that doesn't own the game. This won't prevent you from playing the game because there's no DRM, but obviously Galaxy based online features like achievements won't work.

When you navigate to your library does it show the game you're trying to play?
