gregoriorizzo: Well, All about your thinking but in my opinion VPN is necessary for all thing which is connected to the internet. I am also using VPN for many reasons and every time I connected all my devices with VPN. I am using it all the time while paying bills, torrent downloading, online gaming, browsing all the time. If you are rally gamer than you well-known about the DDoS attack. I am very scared of the DDoS attack it is a big thread for any gamer. "DDoS" You keep using this word, but I don't think it means what you think it means.

Kamamura: Knives! Are they okay?
Not for some of us. :)

I've been using a VPN lately around here but that's because I've been connecting with the server in the office and going out from there.

Too many folks at the library think it's acceptable to (I'll be polite) cause trouble on the internet and the IP address is blocked in many places.

nightcraw1er.488: Maybe I miss something in the translation, but a vpn will not magically fix a connection which is lost at the providers end.
Well... technically, it can. If the provider has servers and multiple locations, and the attack only targets one of them.

Take GOG for one example. They rent space at a CDN (probably multiple CDNs, but let's make it simple). The CDN has server farms (each having multiple multi-gigabit connections) at a number of locations around the world, and you normally get routed to the one closest to you. Now, the network should have failsafe and route you to a different location if the one closest to you is down for whatever reason, but maybe the failsafe isn't functional either because it, too, was attacked.

A VPN could help in this case, as you can get the network to route you to one of the farm in Asia instead of the one in Europe where the connection constantly breaks.

Granted, it's a rather rare case, but it could happen.

Modification to your hosts file would probably be an easier method. If you;re aware of the server's IP addresses.

End users shouldn't be needing to pick out a specific server farm. If they're doing that, something's wrong on the provider's side.

Agreed.

I'm reasonably sure you just "zinged" a spambot. (Though at least you didn't spend five minutes composing a detailed rebuttal like nightcraw1er.) ;P
EDIT: Germany has the most efficient ninjas.

Well, you know how it is, you start out typing a quick reply and then think of something else and then something else and before the sun has drifted across the noon you find yourself rambling on about nothing.

true ^^
my bets are on bot in this case though
Agreed but the phrasing doesn't match via a google search or our internal anti spam solution.

edit: Three tries to post that. If dupes appear, please excuse me.

I think he is talking about having a trojan and being (part of) the source of a DDoS attack.

A VPN won't help you in that case either though.
VPN's aren't illegal. It depends on the usage.....Check the terms and conditions (imagine Steam has it hidden somewhere in the small print...)
