I am in need of a decent, free and preferably open sourced DVD / CD burning tool.

Having just had to do a clean install of Windows 10 due to a fubar dual boot with Linux, I not only want to make some live bootable DVDs, but also I generally have need of something that will rip cds as well as perform other general tasks in the future.

Does anybody have any good suggestions?
I'm wary of all the "10 best... for Windows in 2021" type articles out there.

Why not create live USBs instead of DVDs? I use Etcher for that.
I also remember InfraRecorder from back in the day.

Because right now I only have one spare USB and no budget for more. But as I also said, I want it for ripping CDs (especially the huge amount of rare demos and industry insider releases I have from when i worked in music small press) and some more general use down the line.

Edit 2: also at least one of the live boots is for an old laptop that cannot boot from USB.

I actually just use PowerISO. Not sure about the whole "free" aspect, but I'm using a new-ish version that badgers you like the winrar of yore did and it suits me fine. Especially since you can use it for ISO mounting and whatnot.

Rippers I use:

Audio CDs fre:ac
Data CDs LC ISO Creator (this one I have not used in a long time)
DVDs DVDShrink

The actual question is will you need software to disable protections on the CD/DVDs? That's a whole other bottle of rice schnapps.

Ah, I get you. I keep an old Toshiba USB around, mainly for flashing ISOs. Surprised it's still in working condition.
Curious about your dual boot, what went wrong with it?

Not 100% sure, but the windows boot was no longer recognised (even though it was still there, as was the data partition) and every single possible answer to the problem also failed - as did trying to create a bootable win 10 USB from within linux. Eventually my neighbours kid sorted me a usb boot on his windows machine... and that couldnt find any startup issues, but also couldnt just reinstall windows keeping the data intact as it didnt recognise the partition types - so I had no option but to do a clean sweep.
Thankfully it was a quick task once i was at that point - i had everything important backed up and only lost some game installs really, but it was a slog getting there.

I second ImgBurn (when I used Windows), I used it as my go-to read (rip), burn and general ISO creation tool. Especially after trying various similar well known types of software (Nero, CDBurnerXP, Easy CD Creator etc) with varying degrees of success and failure.

I don't know about open source but I've always found this one to be reliable. BD-R compatible too.

does it rip cds too?
