According to someone else in this thread someone at least has multiple female sex slaves and IIRC a buddy back then when the original was released was quite enthralled by one of the female cleaning crew in a castle or something.

See above. The only female NPCs around were scantily clad, submissive maids around the ruler of the old camp who were too afraid to talk. In Gothic 2 - which takes place outside of the prison area - female NPCs are regular citizens or even leaders (thief guild).

But the thing is that even though the main character is nameless, he is a fixed character. You don't really get to choose who he is, and G2 continues his story from G1. It's still the same guy who got thrown into prison with the other males, a gender choice would not make sense. It's like asking why you can't play a female Geralt in The Witcher series. Theoretically, I guess it would be possible (see Shepard in Mass Effect), but it's not how the main character was imagined, not fitting with the setting or the story as they were originally meant to be.

An amazing game, hope the remake does it justice.

They were the only women in Gothic 1, which might be interpreted as sending the message that women are only good for sex and household chores. Would definitely be cancelled today.

Because we all know that diversity in gender/race/etc in a game's protagonist is much more important than "dumb" things like storytelling/level design/character building/etc, right? /s

(unless it's about not being able to play one's own gender in game? If so I don't see the problem....I play genders/species/etc that i'm not all the time)

The female slaves in Gothic 1 can be seen as questionable imo (I was a bit shocked about them myself), but I don't think there's anything wrong with games not featuring women tbh. It was a refreshing aspect of Gothic 1 for me tbh. Similarly in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games. Just all around male camaraderie (and no, I don't mean that in a homoerotic sense), without any competition over getting women's attention. There should be more such games.

Also some more all female games as well.

Gothic in a nutshell. ;)

Gothic does not need a remake. It is a good game on it's own.

Remastered edition, if done right, would be much more suitable. Just improve inventory and trade UI, record cutscenes in better quality, upscale textures and create high-poly models.

Instead of recreating the first game, they could simply reboot series staring from Gothic 4. Or create a completely new game in the same setting, but with different story and characters.

According to the demo, this remake is going to be too distinct from the original game. I think, most of the old-time players won't be pleased with these changes. And it is unlikely to attract many new gamers either.

I hope, the original Gothic will not be delisted.

Especially if it has the levels of bugs of some Gothic games ;)

Me too...old game versions shouldn't be locked behind a "purchase gate"(of buying another version/etc), imo.

Hmmm; been so long I don't recall off the top of my head. If there were "alternate" controls; I most likely saw that and tried it, and still didn't care for things. But it has been awhile, and I don't remember specifically. I do see, from other discussion, that I wasn't the only one experiencing issues with both / either the controls or crashes - so it isn't all just murky memories.

It WAS under either / or / both Vista and Win7 when I last tried; and experienced a lot of crashing. But, now that we're discussing it, I realize I have not tried it at all under Win10. Might be worth a go; if only to refresh the control-issue specifics in my mind.

But, OTOH, this remake is coming and I feel like I should just maybe wait for that and see what's what then.

I wouldn't be up for a retry of the original for awhile anyways - as right now I'm playing Prey, Planet Nomads, Horizons Zero Dawn, No Man's Sky, Dead State, and the Dishonored series (each depending on my mood at any particular time) - so I'd be waiting a bit anyways until I put something else down (and then I wanted to get ELEX into the picture...).

Is it really only going to work on Windows 10, that will be so disappointing.

If a game is suported for Windows 10, it does not mean that it will not run on others. It just means that if you buy it and it does not work, you are on your own as you were warned. Many games that are supported for w10 will in fact tun on other windows versions as well.

However, this is a moot point, as the game page clearly states: "Works on: Windows (7, 8, 10)"

All the Gothic games are currently 90% off. Probably the best time to grab them if you haven't already.
