Do you name your characters in video games after yourself, or do you make up names for them?

I usually name my characters Adolf after myself.

Nah, i am kidding. But seriously, i do name characters after myself. What about you?
Voltan, Matthias, Dresban, Cain, and now Roosevelt, based on class or gameplay. Only one of those is any part of my name. I also have a list of names for female characters based on class or gameplay.

Well, currently I'm playing Divine Divinity, with the warrior class and his name is also a Warrior.

I think that I'm doing that in all rpgs, hmm.
90% time it's a variation on the same nickname I use here, adjusted to fit the setting, race etc. So it was Brej-gon in KotOR, Brejaric for a dwarf in a fantasy RPG, Brejdalf for a wizard etc.
When I can, I usually play as Winter, the white-haired mage (or equivalent) with a preference for fire.
I always choose canonical names for my protagonist where possible (e.g. Link player and Epona horse in Zelda games), official nicknames which were later established (e.g. Ranger for Quake 1 or Bluehair for Wing Commander 1-2) or even default names where possible (e.g. Courier in Fallout: New Vegas). If it's not possible and I have to choose/write name for myself then I use name generator according to race/lore (e.g. Elven/DND names) for the game and choose what I like the most.
But if there is no lore and I have to name my human male protagonist I usually name him John Smith, because it's the same as Ivan Kuznetsov ;) - just kidding, actually no, I'm not.

In Wizardry 8 I always pick a female faerie for my team and name her Lana.
What a decision, to name your character! I can solve it in 2 seconds or spend a ridiculous amount of time thinking about it.

If there is a canon name (for games with a protagonist with a defined story and personality) I tend to leave it as it is. Sometimes I will make up a name that fits the time period or setting, but usually not the same from game to game.

I have realized I don't use my real name except for Pokémon games, for some reason.
Sometimes I'll use my name, but usually I just pick one of my pet's.
Would be weird to use my own name.
I often go with "Darren".
I usually make up names for all my characters its very rare that I use my name
Usually accept default/random names. If I have to create a name, it’s always something opposite or silly, like Bo Peep for a giant warrior, Goliath for a little dog etc.

Why? I name my characters Michael (not really my name, just a stand-in one) because that makes me relate more to them

Similarly i almost never play as female because i am not a woman and i don't even have a romantic partner so i wouldn't feel comfortable being a female in a video game. Except for when it's forced upon me like in Tomb Raider or Witcher 3 (Ciri)
Quite sure there was another thread like this.
Same answer, ever since I started NWN, had it generate a random name and it came up with Calad Amolyan, the characters I get to name have been Calad, or Kalee if female.

Why not, Darren is a beautiful, classy name, don't you think so?
Regarding playing as a woman, I've done that in some games, notably in Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines, because the female Malkavian looked so sexy.
I usually choose from a small pool of names I invented, mainly because I'm rather bad at coming up with new names. But if the character has a canonical name I usually go with that.
