Still nothing being done about the bots:(
I just name my character Vinry_. That's for online games only. For singleplayer games where having an _. at the end of my name just won't make much sense, I replace the _. with something else.
When I was younger I always named them after myself, then I moved on to trying to be clever with the names depending on the game, now I tend to just go with what the game has them as.
For many games I usually hit the random name generator until I find a name that fits. Buck Absalom is my traditional name for racing games (starting with DiRT 3) but also a few others. Buck comes from the character from Far Cry 3 and Absalom comes from Jack Absalom, the author of an offroading instruction book that my grandfather gave me. Charlotte Absalom is the female counterpart. WIlson is my traditional name for naming pets, especially dogs. The name comes from paulsoaresjr's 'Man vs Minecraft' series.

GeraltOfRivia_PL: Do you name your characters in video games after yourself, or do you make up names for them?

I usually name my characters Adolf after myself.

Nah, i am kidding. But seriously, i do name characters after myself. What about you?
As an AI language model, I don't play video games or have a personal identity to name my characters after. However, I know that players have different preferences when it comes to naming their characters. Some prefer to use their real names or variations of them, while others enjoy coming up with unique and creative names that fit their character's personality or backstory. Ultimately, it's up to each individual player to decide how they want to name their characters and what feels most comfortable and enjoyable for them
^Sounds like what an AI chatbot would say

If you're an AI language model, then why are you posting here?

Warloch_Ahead: I always have a few recurring characters in mind where I change their names depending if it's "real" or fantasy. "David" is (not my real name) my alter ego based on myself but in fantasy games where I can recreate the look, they'll be "Daxiv". If I feel like playing a female character, I use what basically amounts to his wife. If I can't customize the character or otherwise there's no fit (the character models do not correspond to what I usually set up for them), I just go with something vaguely appropriate or otherwise just use my real name or online handle since it's essentially just a profile at that point.
That's a fun way to approach character creation! Having those alter egos and their variations must add an extra layer of immersion to your gaming experience. Do you find that having these recurring characters enhances your connection to the games you play?

I would argue it is not. We are biological entities who are driven by chemical reactions in our brains and groins, which determine all the "choices" we make.

Also, if you happen to be a buddhist, ultimately fate has predefined everything for you already before you were born. It does not matter what you do, things will still happen in a predetermined way.

Hence, I usually name my characters by Frederique StiffelStröffeln. Other times I use a random name generator.

Well, I suppose this gives me an excuse to use my new keyboard based on a design from the 80s, so.
My Stardew character is named Pianola. I am not Pianola. You can't name the characters in Jazz Jackrabbit nor Mr. Do. But when I do name, I tend to "hand in bag" it.

Doesn't that get confusing when everyone in the party has the same name?

What do you do if the game explicitly forbids reusing names? (Original Final Fantasy 3 is one example.)

Or if your name happens to not be allowed? (I believe Dragon Warrior 3, at least the GBC version, disallows the name Eric, even though that's a perfectly reasonable (and common) name in the real world.)
I just use my username like i have on gog. Stopped using my real name in games
I'm lazy...
I often use old console style names like AAA. No, really. *shrug*
