I have tried to play this game, but there are really no instructions. It's a learn by doing thing. I'm still in the intro, but when I try to recruit a new henchman, I am delivered a character screen that I cannot escape in any fashion other than dismissing the person I just recruited. I have tried every one an two key combination to leave this menu, but no dice.

Anyone have a clue?

I'm not sure if you're aware but there is a dedicated game forum here under the 'Age of Decadence series' header. Lot's of useful information can be found there too. Hope this helps.
