https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/aug/31/eu-recommend-member-states-abolish-daylight-saving-time

Wow, about the damn time, if this will come true eventually Routinely changing clocks twice a year is just stupid.

Now the open question is whether the idea would be to stay in "summer time" or "winter time" (=normal time)? I guess it just depends when that new rule would come into effect, in the summer or winter. It would take years anyway before this would materialize, all member states needing to ok it in their parliaments I guess etc.

In the end I presume it doesn't matter whether "EU" stays in summer or winter time, as to my understanding each member state can decide to which timezone they belong to. What I am hoping for to happen is:

1. The change takes place during summer, and whole of EU stays in summertime.

2. Finland (and Baltic countries, and Greece etc.) decide to move to normal time (winter time).

Ga-zinnnng! Whole EU is in the same timezone, plus Finland gets to stay in the normal time which is what I prefer. It is a win win situation to me, having the same timezone as the whole of Europe, plus waking up one hour later throughout the year.

I voted yes so naturally I am happy that they are trying to proceed with it and hope it will be done.
What takes most of my enthusiasm away is that they asked our PM about it today and he only told them he doesn't care about it at all.

I believe the poll asked what people prefer, summer or "winter" time and summer time was somewhat preffered choice. I don't know if they are going to take that into account too. But maybe I am just imagining things and there was no such question?

XD What exactly is the point of a question like this?

Are they going to change how long each season lasts based on the results? :P

"The majority of people prefer summer, so we're getting rid of winter. And while we're at it, most people hate Monday, so where getting rid of that too."

Eh no. Summer time is what you call daylight savings time. Winter time is what I called the regular clocks, not DST.
So it was question which one people prefer because if there are no more changes one of them has to stay while the other one vansihes into oblivion.
The Florida House of Reps has passed a bill to eliminate time changing and put Florida into the Daylight saving time all year round.

That would be awesome. I hope the east coast goes along and we all do it.

I hate "normal time" - which is odd for it to be called that considering we only stay on the winter clock for about 4 months.

What is the point of setting your clock so the sun comes up at 4 a.m. and goes down at 4 p.m.?

Let me enjoy more time to grill and sit out on the back porch to read and sip tea or enjoy a drink.

Does "not care" mean your PM will accept majority's decision, as "whatever, either way is fine"?

They were specifically asking about abolishing the moving of clocks twice a year. It is something that has to be decided on EU level, as there is a directive about it.

As to which timezone each EU member state belongs to, I don't think there is any such directive. Every member state can decide what is best for them. As the article mentions, Spain has been urged to change its timezone to that of UK (makes sense when you look at the map), but it is up to Spain whether they will do it or not. Maybe Spanish like to be in the same timezone as France, Italy, Germany etc. even if they are considerably more to the west and have to wake up one hour "earlier" (ie. the sun will rise later for them that for their eastern cousins).

Umm, what? In normal time, it would generally mean that the sun is at its highest at noon (1200 military time), and the night at its darkest at midnight (2400 military time). Or thereabouts, the selected timezones are always just approximations..

So in normal time, if the sun rises at around 8am, it would mean it would go down 4pm. If it rises 6am, it goes down 6pm. And so on and so forth.

So if the sun rises for you at 4am, it means it wouldn't go down until 8pm, in normal time.

Instead of changing clocks to unnatural times, wouldn't it make more sense to you just go to work an hour earlier, and leave one hour earlier? Then you can have that extra hour for drinking and grilling.
Why would I want to give up this amazing view in the evening at roughly 7:30 so that is can be completely dark out?

Sure, if you are farming it makes sense to go by the sun. But when school starts at a set time and the banks, stock markets and business operate at a set time moving the clock back 1 hour for winter/normal time means that you have one hour less of the sun in the evening. Do I care if the sun is up when I am driving to work or in the office? Hell no. I want the extra time in the sun in the evening when I can enjoy it.

Why would I want to give up this beautiful scene and evening at 7:30 p.m. local time in late August for pitch black dark?

The whole idea should be banned. Hate it. I'll say this, I hate the EU and think they're a disgrace to civilisation. But I most definitely agree with this.
When I leave this forum, the thing I'm going to miss most is darthspudius' whimsical easy going banter. :P
Yep. I'm all for abolishing DST. It's a stupid idea. But I wouldn't be against making summer time the default. Sure, the astronomical time is winter time with the sun being in the Zenith at 12:00 ... but frankly, no one uses sundials anymore. So we might as well agree on midday being at 13:00h

Or stick with winter time, but start and finish work an hour earlier. Would be the same. But changing the clocks twice per year is just stupid.
