I'm pretty sure one of the key points of DST is that of saving electricity by having more light in the evening. I say "pretty sure" because to me that has always seemed dubious considering that means having to turn the lights on in the morning instead.

I remember reading a news article several years ago about a county in Indiana (a state in the USA) switched to DST. Indiana is known for its counties doing whatever they want in regard to DST, so some do it and some don't, and that's by means of a county passing laws for itself.

Anyway, according to the article later on that county had noticed there was a significant increase of electricity use within the county after it started to do DST. Best they could figure it was due to air conditioning. Apparently after people get home from work they turn on the air conditioner, and then have one more hour of sunlight to go up against. Who knew air conditioners used more electricity than lightbulbs? Well, I guess now everyone knows.

Keep in mind, the air conditioning was also being blamed for the electricity outages. Too much drain the service. People dying from heat, usually elderly folks. That's partly how they got clued in on the extra use of electricity.

Of course, the solution is to have everyone go to work an hour later. People would get to sleep in for an extra hour, have sunlight in morning when preparing to go to work, save electricity when getting home late afternoon, less power outages and less elderly people dying from air conditioning failure. Or they they could simply stopped doing DST.

Decisions, decisions…

EDIT:
BTW, Daylight Shifting Time seems to me more accurate. It isn't saved, there isn't more, it's just shifted.
