GR00T: They show up in so damned many games, that I just assumed there must be a fairly large segment of gamers that actually likes them.
I've never once heard of anyone who does. It's just that games devs, for the most part, have no idea what they're doing. So everything has to be a rework of a previous idea. Hence QTEs, checkpoint saves, regenerating health, cover shooting etc.

They're so fucking clueless they even put that "don't turn off your computer while the save icon is visible" message at the start of every game. Like people are prone to just wrenching their PC's plug right out the wall whenever the save icon pops up. That's what we're dealing with here.

Wait... you mean I'm not supposed to do that? O_o I guess that explains why I can never save my games. :D

Well... The message is usually already there, might as well make use of it. I mean it's just a generally good advice :-P

Navagon: Has anyone ever actually said they like QTEs? I thought it was only hopelessly out of touch devs who think that QTEs are a thing which gamers want?
The only QTE I ever liked was in the Dracula fight in I Wanna Be The Guy. If you've seen that scene, you'd know how hilarious it is.

As for things I hate in games:

Anything social media related.

In FPS, anything with regenerating health. Really, any FPS that isn't somehow derived or inspired by the classic 1990s shooters like Doom or Quake. I passionately hate Halo because of its bland single player campaign.

But then why did they scrap the "Please don't set your head on fire. Doing so can seriously affect your ability to play the game." message?

hudfreegamer: I love regenerating health (which a lot of people seem to dislike). It keeps me in the action and you don't need to show health on the hud any more.
That's funny because I never used to have any problem staying in the action before regenerating health came along. Then suddenly every hit caused the screen to go red. Which if nothing else, really pisses me off.

Seasons in games like Diablo or Path of Exile. I’m just not a competitive player, so I don’t care one bit about these things. If the game is not good enough by itself, then no season mode will get me to play it either. The worst offenders are games that have exclusive season content that you get no access to in "normal" mode. Well, if you don’t want me to play your game then this a good basis to start from, I guess.

Some people here will call me crazy, but I don't like the X-Com or Jagged Alliance series. Granted I never actually played them and they could suddenly show themselves to be actually fun, but what I've seen so far doesn't make me feel compelled to try any of them.

I guess I'm simply way too inclined away from Turn-Based Strategies. That's probably the same reason I absolutely suck at chess even though most people I know consider me smart.
I can't stand any type of escort missions (travel from point A to point B, protect X from damage/death while en route). Wait, does anyone really enjoy those?

BIG TIME THIS!!!!
Coop for the sake of coop and without any thoughtful design, because a bad game doesn't get objectively better with friends.

Put me down for QTEs. Something that Shenmue got right, then everyone else after immediately got wrong.

I noticed that Morrowind does something interesting with this. For (at least) one sidequest in particular, if the escortee dies while you are trying to escort her, you can check her body and get the reward anyway. How does that sound? (Certainly much better than having escort dead = game over or sent back.)

I could also put in: Any feature that makes taking damage or dying particularly undesirable. I actually like it when taking damage or dying is actually the fastest or most effective way of accomplishing a task, I also like it when I don't have to reset every time someone dies in an RPG. (Permanent penalties for resurrection aren't the only offending game element here; something as benign as Baldur's Gate 2's "drop everything on death" is also annoying, and I choose that game as an example because resurrection magic is easily available in that game.)
I cant stand 3rd person view, its unnatural..i will never play games like dead space or the witcher solely because of this.and yes, regenerating health in fps games.no new fps games for me thank you very much
