Mueslinator: It's interesting you bring up the EU. They actually have been reprimanded by their data protection office for using Microsoft products - they do not satisfy their own legislation in terms of data protection and privacy.

At the same time, the German government has started moves away from closed-source software and solutions towards open architecture, file standards (one of the first things is to embrace ODF as new standard for digital communications), and digital sovereignty.

Meaning that Linux and open software may be seeing rapid adaption in the next few years in Europe because Microsoft is not a dependable solution any more for us.
At the same time they want to add backdoors to all secure algorithms to lessen privacy etc.

https://www.theregister.com/2025/04/03/eu_backdoor_encryption/

So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised at all if EU claimed they totally must have the possibility to brick anyone's PC or phone or whatever, if they are using it for... well, of course kiddie pr0n, that argument works for all initiatives because if you oppose the initiative, you are obviously a pedo yourself.
Thread title definitely sounds like timppu is preparing to burgle your PS5 while you're at work.
Hmm? Nintendo? You mean those guy's that illegally forced down those emulators like Ryujinx and so on (yeah - I know it's not strictly illegal to threaten people but it is at least very scummy)? And now they even threaten to brick your legally bought hardware if you do something with your property the decided to not like? I wonder if that's even legal. For sure an ULA is not legally binding if it goes against the rights of costumers in a lot of country's (especially Brazil and the EU).

Nah - I won't buy anything from those jerks. As far as I am concerned they can go under and burn in hell.

I am perfectly happy with my PC, and the only console-like I would ever consider is the Steam Deck (that runs Linux by the way, so Microsoft has no grip on it).
There used to be so many lawsuits about type of thing during earlier generations of gaming. I think Nintendo got really scarred when they saw some of those developers and publishers make those unofficial carts for NES and SNES. Not only did they saturate the market with crap, but it was indistinguishable to moms and dads trying to buy something for their kid on a budget. Complete crapware of like 50, to 100, to a million or some crap of games on an NES cart. Not only that, but there were like 3rd party consoles galore. Wild west.

Fast forward to today and the established 3 companies have fully taken over the market and even taken it back from consumer. Though they probably nearly always had the verbiage in their user agreements against modifying their consoles or done whatever... they didn't really have the means to punish the consumer. Today they can brick your stuff.

But what am I going to do? Not buy their console. I already don't do that, but simply because I'm not interested. If I were going to buy it, I'd never try to mod the thing. This likely applies to the vast majority of their playerbase. Which is likely it won't gain much traction unless amplified through socials by everyone with large followings.

What it does do is set a precedent. That's something that everyone should rally around. But that's even less likely to happen. I blame horse armor for everything.
my take on this is.. developers are cracking down on piracy and hackers this way too.
however.. my homebrew side says.. the hardware is mine.. if a want to run doom... i want to run doom.
because homebrew is where the second life is of any console.

so after the Wii and the time it took for the psvita to open up properly.. i stopped with consoles.

worst is when they abruptly end support and then attack homebrew to try get people to upgrade.

you end up being a betrayed fan.. and no one is gona support you when you get the raw end.

JClosed: so Microsoft has no grip on it).
I like how you conveniently forgot the grip that Microso- sorry I mean Valve.
I am no fan of Valve either, but at least they are consumer friendly, because that's the way they earn money. They also did some good stuff like improving WINE. The same WINE you can use on computers that do not run any Valve/Steam software at all.

Microsoft could not care less about "home" users (other than try forcing stuff like a Microsoft account and other "funny" things on them). Microsoft only cares about big corporations and "cloud" use...

nintendo learned that a small piece of code even if written by someone else.. looks the same.. act the same.. because it's the only way you can actually run anything = stolen code.

Microsoft is worse with the Xbox One/Series X+S. The console requires a constant internet connection to access your account and for validation of purchases. Even if the game is installed on your console, if it is not connected to the internet, you cannot play games that you paid for.

That is weird, on the pc, with xbox, or microsoft store purchases for that matter, once your device is registered you have offline access, i believe on either one or all registered devices.

I know for certain i have access to everything offline, unless of course it is a game that is build for online only

.Keys: Nintendo customers do not care a bit. Youtubers will still make day 1 content, milk the hype like crazy. Customers will still pre order and play Switch 2, and in 5 to 10 years they will complain they can't play their games anymore, not knowing or understanding necessarily "why this all happened".
I don't disagree with this, except for the fact that it's only aimed at Nintendo customers. You could insert just about any major company that makes similar products and the same will still be true. The most obvious example to me is Apple, which I hate with every fiber of my being, but I know countless Apple fanboys/girls who will buy anything the company makes and lavish praise on it even when it lacks features they wanted or includes things they don't want.

But there are similar fanbases for all kinds of huge corporations... Even EA has fans who think the company can do no wrong and apparently don't mind being told what they want in a new product.

They're not mutually exclusive.
We can call out Apple, Nintendo, Valve and Microsoft fanboys/girls, all at the same time.
Any kind of fanboyism we see on the internet age is completely and utterly absurd.
It has been a while I've seen someone defending EA/Ubisoft-likes though.

Although I've seen with my own eyes people defending big companies with shady practices the same way some defend states (as in dictatorships) almost in the same way. The explanation to that to me is simple:

Some people think that their whole identity rely on following what should be only a fun hobby, making it a part of their own psychological being, as if it was in their own personality (as in Ego/Persona), to 'adore' a company, a person, a game (Can we talk about MMOs with shady practices and how their crowds defend them?), a state, an ideology, and so on.

They made such things their own identification persona, thus, if what they understand as a part of their own being is somehow attacked, they feel personally attacked, therefore, they must defend it with everything they have, otherwise they risk losing themselves or what they understand is part of their created psychological identity.

We can see this everywhere on the internet - actually - specially on the internet, where every means of communication we have are "false" identification personas. This is not a problem because it also means we can somewhat protect our personal and true identities (its the internet after all). The problem begins when people think their Twitter/X/BlueSky/Instagram/Facebook/YouTube/Twitch profile IS THEIR IDENTITY, or that a company's product IS PART OF THEIR IDENTITY.

I doubt common folk from the 100's~1800's, or, even, 1900's, or, even again, 1940~1980's even, had this kind of personal identification sickness we have nowadays with the internet on and out of any kind of social media. (As some papers show, Jonathan Haidt has some research on it: How the internet/social media affect early brain development and increase the chance of developing some sickness that otherwise would most probably not be present in early age.).

Anyway. I got carried away. This kind of mentality, that is, defending companies and their anti consumer/anti preservation practices, is just another sign that we are sick. And its an identity sickness/crisis.
