I dont see the point of your post. I am entitled to it because GOG said so in the Email I got from them. I made no claims about "entitled to receive the discount on your own terms" - thats entirely your mis-phrasing. However I believe that common human courtesy requires stating additional obstacles (the captcha requirement here) upfront and not lure customers onto their page without doing so as GOG is doing.

If you actually read the first post you would have realized that GOG believes otherwise: The button says "YOUR 85% DISCOUNT" - implying that (according to GOG) this is indeed MY discount.

I gotta admit these things piss me off a lot too, the hoop jumping just to find out what it's about. I was thinking about starting a thread on the D&D one to find out the details since it made you buy immediately, but I recently come up with the perfect solution.

Go to your account, go to orders and settings, then subscriptions and untick the box labelled Get notified about our deals and important announcements, if enouigh of us do that maybe they'll change their mind on this tactic.

Serious answer: Captcha to prevent bots from auto-redeeming stolen codes - is not evil. Just annoying for legit users.
Like I wrote above, a website employing these techniques should host them themselves. They still could use Google technology, routing it through their own servers, effectively masking the user from Google. It's not rocket science.

But nobody does it - be it ignorance, laziness or incompetence. Looking at uMatrix GOG is by far one of the less scary sites.

No, Captcha in and of itself isn't evil, but it is a manifestation of Google, which very arguably *is* an evil. I'll give you some generous odds if you'd like to argue the negative. ;p

I'm starting to think GOG makes money getting people to do captchas for hidden sales they're likely not interested in, anyway.

GOG came up with a new Email - presumably to lure me to some captcha although I dont have proof: However having learned from the last similar ones I did not click anything in it and have promptly deleted it.

It's "Yours" as in the generic generalized version of the word "your"....everyone gets the same exact email.

Unless it said specifically "Here Mr. Zrevnur, this discount is for you alone" then it's not just for you specifically. :)

To be fair, some captcha(in general) used to work VERY WELL at stopping bots(and still does to an extent, else no one would use it).

Even DRM(newer, tougher forms) serves some function(even if not it's intended one) by assuring boards of old people that it stops piracy and puts their "set in their ways minds" at ease for the most part(and it also sometimes stops the first week of piracy on new games, which is when new games usually make the most sales).

The Email was sent intentionally to me so obviously "your" addresses me personally in the sense that I am entitled to the discount. If others also get the same or some similar or some other (or none of these) discount/Email is between GOG and these others.

Yes but you seem to be/have been stating(in prior replies) as if GOG sent those codes just to you, and possibly to inconvenience or pester you(or worse)....and both of those are unprovable & likely false premises.

Gog sent those codes to everyone(on their mailing lists), not just you, and likely isn't trying to bother anyone with captchas(they serve a small use here as others have said).

Could they use a better system? Yes, but they likely implemented the cheapest/quickest one they could find. That is more due to them being frugal/cheap, imo, then them trying to do anything sinister to anyone.

My point is that you are misrepresenting gog's actions/intent(sending out discount codes and using captcha) as some sport of plot against the user base(and possibly you specifically) without much in the way of proof, merely because they sent you an email(that they sent to many many people) with discount codes.

What they are doing here, most likely, is just trying to make a buck by sending people codes to get them to buy games impulsively due to the low prices....that's about all....there's no need to attribute any malice behind their actions that may or may not exist....especially without proof.

They didn't send any to me but I complained about captchas last time they did so I guess I can't complain now :-D

Did you opt out for the newsletter types that usually contains them? That could be why.....
