There's seemingly a rumor going on that ALL games eligible for GoG Connect are _already_ DRM-free on Steam.

I believed it, until it was pointed out to me that the Steam version of Saints Row 2 is *not* DRM-free.

Could someone please say which kind of DRM does Saints Row 2 use on Steam, and whether any other GoG Connect eligible games are also in this situation?

Saints Row 2 uses the Steam client as DRM. It's impossible to run the game without the client. Same case with Trine and, possibly, Witcher.

I would discount this rumour-I know for a fact at least two of the games require the Steam client and at least 1 utilizes Steamworks for achievments and workshop.

There's plenty of games that use some parts of SteamWorks but still are DRM-free :
