JMich: Couldn't you check for the existence of the goggame-galaxyFileList.ini file to see if it's a valid game folder?
The whole point of manual importing option was to allow users to import their installations coming from old installers, that did not include galaxy manifest files.

Initially we only had option to import games coming from newer installers ("Scan and import folders" available under "+" dropdown in sidebar) which worked similarly to what you suggest and was very user friendly and foolproof, but we had a lot of complains from users who said they don't want to redownload game installers...

What about the gfw_high.ico files? Those were included from v1.x installers from what I recall, though pack games did have them in the subfolder. But didn't the packs include the gog.ico and support.ico files as well?

Either way, just thinking out loud.

JMich: I thought that problem should have been fixed already. It used to be that if you added the parent folder of the game ("D:\Video Games\GOG" instead "D:\Video Games\GOG\Morrowind" for example), when uninstalling the game, it would remove everything in the folder you gave it, not in the game's folder (so in the above example, everything in the "D:\Video Games\GOG" folder would be deleted). Do make sure to report it in the mantis, especially since it is an extremely serious bug.

Destro: I've just checked it with Ultima V, purposely selecting parent folder (C:\Games) instead of the game (C:\Games\Ultima 5). After uninstalling the game other subfolders in C:\Games remained intact.

The only way to achieve such unfortunate result of parent folder being wiped, would be to select the checkbox to "Also remove my savegames and any user data" during the uninstallation, which would indeed wipe all the contents of the folder (and as the folder was mistakenly selected in the first place, this would really wipe it).

Until import option cannot magically guess that the selected folder was wrong, sadly there is no magical solution here and we will likely remove that checkbox for manually imported games as there is always a risk of selecting a wrong folder.
I can't remember selecting "Also remove..." but maybe I did, at this point I can't recall. The main reason I picked the parent folder was because I wanted to see if the importer was 'smart enough' to find the UltimaV folder (to save time with importing individual games).

I have had GoG Galaxy crash my computer 3 times. It happens when i try to launch a game.

I was fine with it crashing until I found out that it messed with the registries. It wouldn't let Galaxy launch until i repaired them.

So I can see it deleting all your games.

EDIT: Wait, I misunderstood. I thought you were talking about removing the manual import feature but I realise you just mean remove the 'remove save games and user data' checkbox. False alarm.

coming here to commit an epic necro to say that i've just had a similar problem, only it was my whole My Documents folder

and why was the game installed into My Documents, you may ask?

because it was a 'supposed-to-work-on-newer-systems' old 90s game that would not run on faildows 7 64 bit no matter what i did to it. graphical issues, lag, black screen, errors when trying to run the game and then never runs at all. ran even worse than the CD which didnt run at all, at least the CD version didnt delete crap

for whatever idiotic reason, putting things like that into My Documents seems to make it work, and it did work.. for a short time until i decided 'great, now lets put into a 'general game folder' so its a bit more organized', so i uninstalled it again to reinstall it like that

LOL it nuked the entire folder with everything in it

i mean, im sure i dont need 98% of that crap, but some games i had kept their saves and inis in there. just the fact it NUKED THE ENTIRE FOLDER it completely ridiculous. i have installed problematic games off the CD into My Documents and uninstalled them no problem.

paid $6 to lose files when i could just delete them for free; i feel ripped off!

This deletion thing might be my biggest reason for not going anywhere near Galaxy. GOG really needs to do something to prevent files from being deleted unintentionally.

Did you ever try installing somewhere other than Program Files that wasn't My Documents? Please at least say you installed it into a "GOG Games" folder within My Documents?

Holy hell that has to be the most heartbreaking experience i mean i have saved my documents folder intact from across 1 pc and 3 laptops to the current existing one , aka windows xp, windows 7 , windows 10 to make sure i did not loose pics, documents and save files.

Loosing my documents is one of the worse things that can happen. how come this isn't fixed yet? yeah not touching galaxy for the foreseeable future ....

First off, why are you copying mydocuments across each system, do you (and necro poster) not have a backup? Always have an a backup, if your unsure, add another backup, and just to be safe, and back those up as well.

Next up, why on digital earth are people still installing games into windows folders (or anything, apps tools etc). Never, under any circumstances install anything to windows folders? Let me rephrase, installing anything into windows folders is the number one method to make it not work. Create some folders like c:/mygames, c:/mydocs and install or use them or the windows folders.

As for galaxy, we'll be lazy and let some dodgy third party app do things for you and prepare the consequences when it doesn't do what you want.

Let's keep this in mind for the next time someone wants to split hairs and argue that Galaxy isn't malware. Seriously, think about it people- this is the program that GOG in bundling with their game installers with the explicit goal of having unexperienced users download and use it without even knowing.
