amok: Australia has banned games and media since... welll... since they started with classifications. games like Dreamweb, Phantasmagoria, Manhunt and so on.
And? What are you trying to say? That people shoud have rebelled against it immediately as the first game was banned?

The people could point out the pointlessness of banning games, while other media portraying violence and the like are easily acceptable.

Vainamoinen: ...
Come on, it’s becoming a caricature at this point; of course, some Twitter hashtag used by random peoples over the Internet including some trolls is responsible for electing the current US president, silencing the media, controlling the box-office, terrorism and what else? the Spanish flu? The black plague? forget Illuminati they are has-been, GG are the real master of the world now.

It’s actually a perfect representation of the ridiculous hysteria surrounding the whole issue, it’s no wonder we cannot have any thread discussing about it without it turning into a bloody battlefield.

The silliest part is that the current climate is probably as damaging to “social justice” side as it is to gamers, as today devs can hardly make a game with a female protagonist without having some accusing them of “pandering” where a couple of years ago nobody would have minded.

Yeshu: Australian politics used gamer gate as proof that certain games are bad and should be banned.
Hmmm...the politest way I can say this is "I don't believe you". I even looked it up, and I could find no such "proof" provided anywhere. Please share with me a link where the Australian Classification Board even used the term "Gamergate" with reference to reasons why any game was banned. All I found was that contrary to what has been said in this thread, the ban on We Happy Few was actually REPEALED.
As mentioned, Australia has been banning games since the early 90s, and no Anita Sarkeesian or Game Jurnalizms I've ever read has advocated banning games.

that it is the law of the country, and nothing more progressive or right wing or left wing or whatever that any other law a country may or may not have. are you going to blame the banned games in Germany on the anti-GG as well? or films banned in the UK? or in US? what about countries where hardcore pornography (like Norway) is banned, been for more than 100 years - it is the anti-GG's fault?

films are also banned in Australia for the same reasons.

not sure how to make it clearer.... different countries have different laws and regulations- this is not due to anti-GG / leftwing / progressives / whatever but many years of policy and national law makers - i.e. a looooooooong national history...

You mean like laws about women suffrage or same-sex marriage in US? That have nothing to do with progressives/conservatives or any social activism, right?

ALL laws are based on social activism. to understand a policy of a country, you need to know its political, moral, religious, whatever history.

edit - a law against same-sex marriage is just as much social activism as one for it.

edit 2 - and Australia classification policy is most likely a result of its religious history.

Then why social activism of one group of people, who advocate censorship and banning games that they don't like, gets very positive and supportive coverage in the western media, while social activism of another group of people who want free speech and games being played as devs consieved them, labeled as nazi?

Again. You mixed up the cause and effect. All those things existed for a long time and gradually became more and more annoying. And eventually, people who were fed up by all that crap decided to unite (which was especially easy with the spread of the Internet and tools on social media platforms). And what gaming press decided to do? To stomp on them and discredit in all ways possible, including accusations of racism, sexism and so on!

where is the censorship and banning?

If anything, the "progressive" camp is against censorship and bans, as many of their topics are banned in many places. AFAIK they where advocating diverse games, topics and target audiences, not restriction. having more divers representation and whatnots, do not mean that all games must have it. they are critical of lack of diversity, yes, and wants more, but that does not mean that all games must have. I have not seen a single person saying so. Making games for "non-gamers" as well, does not mean that all games have to be so.

This thread has become a excellent example of why "geeK" sites...Movies,Games,Comics..are the worst place on Earth for political discussions. Endelss posturing.

Mind explaining that in detale what you mean by that?

Most people here provide some valid arguments for there statements and it's primarily a few trolls that jump in and tell them to shut up.

Everywhere! Just google "games censored by sjws" and you will get a bunch of games (japaneese mostly) that were censored for "sexualization of women" or were not released in the eastern market at all. And before you say that all those are just unfounded alt-right insinuations, here is a link to the interview directly from developer: ---------

Yes, it is very convenient position "We don't want all games to have diversity, we are just critisizing every game that doesn't meet our diversity standards."
