The controllers I miss are the ones everyone seems to love crapping on nowadays - the Dreamcast controller and the Duke Xbox controller. Sweet, delicious hamburger-esque and perfect for someone like myself with hands that might as well be inflated gloves worn by a clown at times.

Fender_178: But if it's a game made for a controller like any platformer or action adventure game or even an RPG then using any other control method is clumsy and terrible but at the end of the day it boils down to the genre of game.
An RPG? Why would using a controller for those be any good? I can just imagine navigating all the inventory or any even half way complex menu with a controller. No thanks. And it's not like shooting was the only thing that was crap with a controller. A lot of the platforming also was prather frustrating at times, because controlling the camera (so alligning jumps) was also annoyingly imprecise.

I guess a 2D platformer would not have that problem, but it's not like I ever played a 2D platformer that felt in any way problematic to control with a keyboard/keyboard + mouse.

I can only imagine controllers maybe being better for fighting games and flight sims.
When I read the title, I was secretly hoping you've finally had a revelation and got over your prejudices, just like I did a few years back, but the actual conclusion was just as predictable as Uncharted's story. ;)

It's just confirmation bias. Get an Xbox controller and play some games that are actually fun with gamepads and make the controls less complicated instead of more, like platformers, brawlers etc., not FPS/TPS shooters which are obviously their greatest weakness compared to mouse and keyboard.

As for Uncharted, I thought it was pretty meh, all in all. It would have been more fun with mouse and keyboard, but not a lot. Too many tedious enemy waves, repeated at nauseam, not enough variety in the opponents, pretty lacklustre gameplay. Some cutscenes were nice though ...

Breja: Controllers suck.

A friend of mine left his PS4 at my place for the time being (he doesn't really use it much, and since we usually meet at my place we hope it will get some multiplayer use here). And since it's here, I decided to try out some PS only games. I just finished playing through the first Uncharted, and good heavens does aiming with a controller suck. It's like trying to put shoes on an octopus. Unbelievable. It's so slow and imprecise and frustrating as fuck.

And don't tell me I need to "git gud". I finished the game and got all the shooting achievements along the way (five headshots in a row, 100 headshots total), without even going out of my way to do so. So it's not me. I can use it fine... as far as it can be used at all.

I actually liked the game, it's a total Indiana Jones rip-off, cliched and predictable as hell, but it's fun enough, but it would be so much more fun with a mouse and keyboard.
Mmm, no, I wouldn’t agree with that. There are games that are only playable with controller.
Uncharted is really good as is the second. Well worth playing and easy enough even with stick aiming. The third was not as great, and neither was 4. Although the spin off with the two lead women was better. Got PS4 for the exclusives like you(mostly red dead, which I have played half hour of!), get god of war, excellent game. Wouldn’t bother with last of us, unless you like crawling around in the dark. I gave up just after leaving the compound as I was bored stiff. All of them very playable with controller.
It is a good point though and why most games now come with auto-aim and such like.
Sometimes a controller adds a lot to a game. The Witcher 2 was much better with a controller than without. Same for Dragons Dogma. But Dragon Age was much worse.

Each game will show strengths and weaknesses with different input devices. I had a friend that played XWIng with mouse and keyboard. It's possible, but a joystick is so much better.

I have actually finished Dishonored using a controller, though in a pacifist walkthrough. Some things (combinations) were you'd need 3 hands on the keyboard are easier to do on the controller. Aiming isn't.
Yeah, they are shit for almost everything. In fact, to play my platform games and arcades I purchased an arcade joystick I can essentially use everywhere (Windows Win32, MAME, DOSBox etc.).

Never a purchase was so blessed, gaming-wise.

Possibly for the same reasons it was a much worse game than the first one.

Fonzer: Reasons why i think FPS games should be on pc and not consoles.
My favorite FPS-es are still Timeplitters 2 and Future Perfect, and they are perfectly playable with controllers.

I wasn't talking about RPGs llike Diablo or Diablo 2 or even POE for that matter RPGs that would be better with a Keyboard and Mouse. I was talking about more or less like Dragon Warrior/Quest or Final Fantasy or even Persona turn based RPGs that are on consoles for starters. And a the few action RPGs like Secret of Mana, YS, that started off as console titles that found themselves on to newer platforms.

I'll just leave this here:

I think it has lots to do with what you've grown up with.

I like many different forms of controlling in games just because I grew up with the Keyboard and Mouse when I played a game on PC but I also played console games so I also quite like controllers new and old.

But there is no greater truth than accepting our one true lord and savior the two-button Joystick.

Controllers can add a lot to some games inddeed. Like, you can play in any position. As a exemple I like to play lying on the bed or couch and usually use mouse only or controller. I do have a wireless keyboard but is very cumbersome and unfriendly. I don't like use keyboard outside the table.

Regarding controllers, do anyone know any not expensive controller where the d-pad is good?
my list so far:
Original xbox360- good all round but d-pad is unusable
Fake xbox360 (bought by mistake ;( )- dpad is even worse and analog controllers lack precision
Msi Controller- easilly the worst d-pad I ever gamed with althoug the controller is quite good (except the micro usb connection is very weak and prone to disconnect/break
Trust Gtx 540- very cheap and usable, analogs are not as precise as Xbox ones and d-pad is much better but far from perfect, every button seem to have a long key stroke/lack of feel
Logitech 310- ok controller all round

Edit: is freaking hard to get any good controller "review" wich include D-pad, maybe because most reviewers are not "gamers"?

All listed controllers have X-input and work flawlwssly on Windows/Linux, some bluethooth controllers seem to have a bit of "lag" pressing the buttons, on fighting games this is utterlly important and never used one for that reason.

I really miss the Playstation 2 controller where the button presses were analog, racing games were very fun this way (Gran Turismo 3) and some very inventive game design based on that, like Metal Gear Solid 3

Maybe "other" "gamers" have "different" "opinions".

I have an xbox 360 and One controller, and for me, their D-Pad is fine enough - both for modern games and for Genesis/Super Nintendo emulations. Am I now not "Gamer" enough for you?

Is the 8bitdo avalible where you live? Many of them are inspired after Nintendo Controller, which after the Neo Geo Pocket and Vita probably have the best dpad.
