timppu: It is not like I'd put my nose to my LED monitor or TV either, especially for several hours. Better safe than sorry.
I haven't researched this all that much, but check out this XKCD chart.

KasperHviid: I'm not sure that is an issue. The focal distance in most HMDs is 2 meters, much further away than your monitor.
avatar
timppu: Maybe, but I am not only concerned about that, but about keeping radiating LED screens right next to my eyes for hours and hours. I rather let others be the guinea pigs.

It is not like I'd put my nose to my LED monitor or TV either, especially for several hours. Better safe than sorry. I guess we will have some answers to the prolonged exposure within the next 40 years or so.
Not to mention the price of a VR setup. I'd have to upgrade my entire PC, plus another $400 USD on top of that for the VR equipment. No thanks, I'm not some kind of millionaire. Give me the Gold Box D&D games over silly VR stuff any day.
how can it be goty when it is only available to a small player base?

becuase GOTY means Game Of The Year, and you can use whatever you want to define what is your game of the year?

What was your game of the year? Mine was probably Creeper World 4

Quest 2 costs $300 and works without a PC. The downside is the Facebook integration.

Yeah, I don't have a Facebook account and I never will. Facebook would be worse in my mind than any form of game DRM. Guess I'm just an old-fashioned Luddite.

But you won't play Alyx or other more advanced games without PC.

timppu: I care too much for the health of my eyes, to put some LED screens right in front of them.

Just feel like pointing out how that's a strange mix of words. The focal distance is 2 meters away thus it isn't damaging to your eyes. Call me old fashion but I still believe pointing a telescope at the sun, even if out of focus, is bad for your eyes.

In all honesty though, given how much screen time we already have, the headsets aren't going to be putting out anymore lumens than what we already expose ourselves to.

IAmBored2: And how much did Valve pay for that? A million here, a million there, and reviews are always on your side. Just look at Cyberpunk 2077
avatar
CityDPRED: No, unlike CC P Red Valve used their funds to make a decent game, CC P R spent all their funds on cameos of plebs.
Valve works with or is coerced by censorship groups.

scrubking: Amazing how that game has been so ignored.

StingingVelvet: I don't think VR will ever be that mainstream, for various reasons (the biggest of which being the same thing that kept 3D niche, people not wanting to wear headsets while they relax). That's not a knock on VR, just saying I don't think Alyx was capable of making it a mainstream technology, at least not yet. Maybe when it's half the cost and a quarter the weight.

Anyway, I'd love to play Alyx but VR is a total no-go for me because of my astigmatism. I doubt they ever port it to normal screens, so... oh well.
They could because we have had head tracking and hand remotes like the Wii plus for ages.

and its worth $0 when facebook f**ks people around.

It's insane to have these expensive pieces of equipment tied to DRM or spyware when there's no real need to do so.

While Quest 2 is a good buy, I'm on the same page. The privacy cost is horrifying. Yet, if I couldn't afford a better HMD, I'll happily sell my privacy for VR.

Made this comic, by the way:

MysterD: Are there any mods out there to run HL: Alyx w/out VR kit?
Yeah, I watched some on Youtube, but they seemed realllllly rough. Maybe they've gotten better or will get better, I'll check back in at some point. Still there's only so far you can push a square block into a round hole, as they say.

There are so many good games made specifically for the screen medium, that it would make little sense to waste your time on something ported from another medium.

Most of the stuff making VR cool doesn't translate well. Like the floating hands, which makes some sense in VR due to the lack of body tracking. Or details like this This liquid shader.

True. On the other hand, a lot of highly praised VR games have really poor graphic:
GORN (the original VR brawler)
SUPER HOT VR (actually a port, but a highly successful one)
Beat Saber Got 470 hours of playtime.
The Cubicle
The Thrill of the Fight

I can't help but wonder if the lower horsepower of Quest 2 will force VR devs to forget about the graphic and return to the roots of game design.
Speaking of Facebook and VR, tjeck this out ...

After posting about breaking my neck while playing VR, my personal Facebook account was randomly deleted by Facebook and my Oculus account and games are all gone..
