When I first started playing games (primarily Atari 2600) I played whatever games I could find. Into college, I purchased my first real PC and experienced early flight sims and the heydey of the point-and-click adventure. Coming back to gaming in the 2000's via console, I was first drawn by WWII fps, but then moved to action RPGs... and now back to PC I'm starting to turn-based RPGs and some strategy games.

I can remember a time when I swore that I'd never play a game with a hex map... now I'm actually slowly becoming drawn to them! Funny how things change.

Anyone else finding genres interesting that they originally hated (or had no previous interest)?

Oh yes it did.

I loved playing JRPGs and nothing else from the SNES to the PS1. Couldn't even touch an action game. Then one day, Diablo one came out and I played it Coop with a friend. Slowly but surely Hack'N'Slashes (as the genre is known here) became my favorite. I still played JRPGs but they felt boring as they were slower and I was no longer interested in their convoluted plots.

But I started to feel a need for a story coming back. I moved on to play HnS and CRPG, which I loved. Grew a bit bored of CRPG (slower, too much text, too long) and found about three years ago the Point N Click genre, which seems to be a mix of what I was looking all along.

Nowadays, I play CRPG, Diablo-Clone and Point N Click. Plenty of Metroidvania and CityBuilder games in here but JRPGs ? Not so much. I still try out some Japanese RPG once in a while but it's no longer a genre I can spent days in a row playing (except Dragon Quest XI, but that's another story :p)

Yes, I used to have the patience for Pokemon. I no longer do.

I used to 100% every Pokémon game up untill X/Y. Now, I can't even find the interest to play any.

I don't think so. As time passes, what happens mostly is that I begin to tolerate other games coming from different genres. One example would be how I'm beginning to enjoy point and click games due to the great stories that some of them have to offer, as well as the humorous jokes that each game can sometimes bring to the table. I also appreciate those games more for their puzzles have allowed me to refresh my brain from time to time.

Honestly it's funny how little I've changed since I first got into PC gaming. I dove in with point and click adventures, FPS games, RPGs and hybrids like Deus Ex and Thief. Decades later I'm mostly playing the same exact stuff. When I try to change and buy console style action games or stuff that's super hyped I get bored and it just reminds me to stick with what I actually like.

The action economy of Pokemon is just punitive these days compared to most others. You get a single turn to do a single action that in most typical situations can hit two targets, vs a potential party of 6. It's a slog.

Nope, I've been into RPG and RTS since I've been into video games.

Not much no. Only two things changed. For a very long time I disliked rpgs with turn-based combat and any and all jrpgs. Fallout 1 and Chronotrigger quickly cured me of those afflictions though.

Nope. I still like the same stuff. And I just discovered that point and click games can be fun. I was always curious why that monkey island/pirate game is so popular. I understood why when I installed and played Beneath A Steel Sky. lol. Still going through it and having a blast.

Not much. I still don't play any fighting or sports games (the only exception being NHL 2002 (love that game)) nor point&click adventures. But pretty much everything else is fair game.

Same here! (Not Atari, mostly PC and a bit of Megadrive/Genesis and Amiga)
Though my first and biggest love was always point & click adventures. What I loved about those is what I still look for in games: story, immersion, interesting interactivity, atmosphere.
So the genres I mostly play have the most of those aspects: Various forms of adventures, RPGs, horror games, certain strategy games, immersive sims.
