I'm in the middle of a AoW3 game last night, power goes off in the middle of the night, I boot up this morning and GoG has now installed a new UI or some such. The game I was playing? Says I last played 2 years ago, and won't let me launch it.

So... wtf?'

I can't even get the "Play offline" UI to show up, which is what I want. I buy through GoG so I don't have to deal with all the BS from other vendors. Are those days gone?

I have no idea what you're talking about, but if you want play a game without Galaxy (while keeping it installed):
- Quit Galaxy
- Run the exe from the game folder

GOG offer offline DRM free installers and you never need Galaxy installed. Also, even if you use Galaxy, there's no real DRM involved so you can keep it closed and launch the game from the .exe in its folder.

I have no idea what weird power outage stuff might have happened to your PC, but no Galaxy is not required outside of multiplayer for a handful of titles.
Uninstall Galaxy and all the shortcuts to the games it made and make new shortcuts to suitable .exe's. Now you can play offline. You just had Galaxy update to version 2.x on you.

If you on the other hand want Galaxy, you probably should find the repair function.

Verify the installation through Galaxy.
Good idea to verify/repair the Galaxy installation and the game installation, the power out could have corrupted some files, maybe be safe and do a scan of your hard drive.

No those days are not gone yet. What has happened is that you are supporting pushing GOG towards removing that by using the client. The point of GOG is single player, offline games. Not achievement, cloud saves, multiplayer, social media etc. That was brought in to try and draw in the crowd who do not care about drm, and just want steam.

Hence the best idea, uninstall galaxy (and then spend a while making sure it is fully removed), then download the offline installers from the website using a browser of your choice (with any plugins of your choice), the saving those files as backups and using them to install the actual games from them. All within your choice and power then.

If however you want clients and all that, just go use steam, cheaper, bigger catalog etc.

If we are talking about the gaming industry in general, then it is a big yes. Has been this way for over 15 years. Just starting your legally bought game without some obnoxious client( don't want to name them, but we all know them) is a wet dream of many of us. Crappy DRM practices were present even back then, but this is taking it to another level. If we are talking about GOG, then it is a maybe. At the moment they are still behind the DRM-free only moto, but they sure as hell are pushing Galaxy down our throat, and putting the offline installers in a dark corner of their website as if they are embarassed of them. At least that is my personal view on it. Might be wrong do, i hope. Cheers

I have no idea what you're talking about. I have zero interest in using the GoG client - I just want to play my games. I don't give 2 figs about achieves or any of that - take your projections elsewhere, thanks.
And thanks guys! I uninstalled Galaxy and now I'm solid.

Exactly, we’ll done. No need for the client. This was the point I was making.
