To call Jeff Bezos an astronaut is an insult to actual astronauts. He's nothing more than a space tourist contributing to the space junk problem.

nightcraw1er.488: There is the optimistic, exploring the universe, understanding the mysteries, providing a better living for the wolds, helping anything we come across. We will call this the Star Trek viewpoint.
Then there is the opposite, the looking upon the vast crawling infestation of humanity rapidly eating its way through the host planet, greedily eyeing the stars for what they can get from them.
My viewpoint is that the second viewpoint is probably the nearest to how bad it would be, the Star Trek one is a complete pipe dream.

borisburke: You have created a false dichotomy. The fact is that this planet will become uninhabitable at some point in the future. Whether by asteroid impact, unusually large CME, any of a dozen other scenarios, or just the inevitable death of our Sun, it's going to happen. So will the human story end there, or will it continue, elsewhere? That's the real choice.

I choose survival.

*Star Trek is not a pipe dream. It's fiction. You know the difference, right?
The death of the sun is so far in the future to not be relevant, life on earth would have ceased long before that, in the galaxy as well.
Space travel however is just over the horizon.
Sure a meteor could impact, but i am sure Harry Potter and Morgan Freeman will survive. The human story, we are simply moving tubes, the human story is consume and multiply.
* Star Trek is a pipe dream for a lot of people, not just the millions of fans, but those hopeful for a future of space exploration, fiction is simply an expression of hopes and dreams.

Aside from this, there was an interesting story on the bbc:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-57922664
Headline: Pegasus spyware seller: Blame our customers not us for hacking
That’s an interesting standpoint, don’t blame the weapon makers, blame the government customers who use it? Can’t see that company being around for long.

There are no robots in Dune.... it is against the butlerian jihad, and as such a big taboo. this is one of the reasons why the spacing guild is so powerful

FTFY. No AIs either, or any form of robotic intelligence.

Complex mechanical contraptions lacking intelligence (see Ixians), powersuits and whatnot are technically allowed. So is genetic programming to some degree, which the Tleilaxu excel at - though abhorred, and border-lining heresy, some may argue these views are mostly a result of political machinations, since the Bene Gesserit have also dabbled in the arts.

Time4Tea: Not a problem, if the robot is programmed in base 3 ;-)
The nature of the nightmare may increment, but otherwise the point stands :P.

well, yes. i just tried to simplify it a little, but you are correct. The Ixian machines are used a lot, and some do border on what falls within the butlerian jihad. And off course there are hints that on Ix you have AI's hidden. To quote the O.C. Bible - "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind."

Genetics are not part of the butlerian jihad as such, which is why for example the facedancers are allowd. The Tleilaxu are seen as 'dirty' and 'perverse', but not as a taboo as with 'thinking machines'. There are a lot of genetic maniulation done by most factions, for example the breeding programe by Bene Gesserit and the creation of Spacing Guild navigators (or even Leto's own breeding program). Though only Tleilaxu use technology in such a way for gentic manipulation, which is frowned upon. (Off course, later with the discovey of the nature of the axlotl tanks, things chage a little bit.)

Biologically, certainly. But I'm optimistic that we can rise above our biology.

Star Trek is fiction > Objective fact.
Star Trek is a hopeful dream > Subjective opinion. (Hitler had a dream. The Taliban have a dream.)

And the problem is? If it's(as some suspect) just a galaxy/universe full of mostly barren rocks, and the outcome of it all will likely be the same in the end, why does it matter much if we use some of them or not?
