MaxFulvus: Who is ready to buy movies here whereas you can find some dvds for almost nothing in garage sales, second hand shops or with a huge discount on internet ? There is no hardware or compatibility issues contrary to games and the only drm is the regional lock (zone 1, zone 2...) but the difference between the versions are ridiculous (cover, some bonus...).

The GOG movie section is dead, let it rest in peace !
I think that's the biggest problem. I was able to get the first 4 leprechaun movies for $5. I'm not sure that GOG could have afforded to sell them to me for that, even if they had a license to do so.

I think it could be cool for independent releases, I'm going to be making a short in June and we'd probably be interested in getting it in the movie store here on top of any other sites we can get it on.

But, therein lies the problem, the movies people are likely to want are available elsewhere for cheap, or they won't be here at all. It was just a stupid idea that didn't get thought out properly.

Darvond: It turns out that films that premiered at Art's house are a bit too niche for us users.

Not an art house. Some guy named Art(s) house. With 3 couches.

Now if say MST3K had appeared or some other thing like that, I'm sure people would have hopped. But turns out film people are nuts about DRM for some odd reason.
That's precisely the problem. There's a ton of indie movies out there, but probably not a lot that people would come to a game retailing website to buy.

The good news, it's dead. The bad news; early access took its place.

...blegh in that case id rather have the movies
I'd love a place to buy DRM-free digital movies, and I mean real movies, not the ones that were sold here. If only GOG sold classic movies...

Fairfox: ...There's a movie section now?
It's this blurred thingie between Games and Community. My eyes always treat it as a spacer of some sort.
I still think it could be saved. There is a lot of good old classics from the 50's to the 70's. Now I don't know about the legal and financial implications. Maybe it could not be done.

Blegh, in that case I'd rather have new games.

Can't be done. The rights holders are particularly greedy and you need deep pockets. Even Netflix has trouble maintaining a decent collection.

Nope, It's in coma.
I got to know and love Ink and The Frame here so I'm glad about GoG's movie section. I'd like more DRM-free indie movies that are not gaming documentaries. Hunter/Prey would fit here and is a cool indie movie too.

I suppose so. I was considering old series like the old Twilight Zone series or The Outer Limits. Or the kind of movies the Mystery Science Theater 3000 finds. But then again, it would not be too curated in that case (not that I think it is now).

Another possibility would be a contract with the likes of Vodo.net, for instance.

I probably should have worded that differently. The things that are popular enough to be worth having here are unlikely to be available. The things they could license are things that people probably wouldn't want to watch.

Things like the Twilight Zone and Outerlimits are still being shown on TV in the US. Not to mention that most, if not all of them have regional rights reserved that would have to be sorted out.

So, it's probably not impossible in the technical sense, but pretty close.

johnnygoging: no respect for indie movies.

yuh uncultured bastards.
It's not a problem with indie films in general, it's that the films GOG has released here are all complete garbage.

MaxFulvus: Who is ready to buy movies here
I would, if I could buy actual movies, also in HD, especially if GOG also brought back the streaming possibility (for watching when you haven't downloaded something yet, or haven't got the media).

I'd very much prefer having some legendary movies in digital DRM-free form, instead of being locked to a Bluray disc or anything like that. I don't even have a Bluray player at my home, and I couldn't watch the Blurays on e.g. a tablet, or a laptop without a Bluray drive.

The main problem is that GOG's offerings on the movie section are pretty uninteresting to me, and also pricing could be a problem too, e.g. if GOG really had some good movies like The Sting or Robocop 1987 or Hellraiser movies (with or without regional selling restrictions).

By the way, I think Steam offers some movies too, yet I don't see similar vitriole over their expansion from mere games to non-gaming? Or in Humble Store for that matter, for selling ebooks etc.?

Yes, the movie section is dead although in principle I would be willing to buy movies here if there would be any interesting ones. I mean that this place is as good as any other place and the buying experience so far was sufficiently nice. I would have bought the right movies.

Basically the Movies section on GOG looks like a halfhearted try to realize a mediocre idea and not very surprisingly it failed.
