Hi folks, got a question. Do I really need MGE XE for this game. I've played it a number of times since it first came out, and love it. I also played it on Steam. But recently bought the GOTY edition here at GOG because I wanted to play it independently from Steam.

So, I know how to add mods and so forth, but I'm having a devil of a time with MGE XE. It messed up the font size, for one thing, and in general is just not playing nice. I've tried a number of setting examples I've found on the web, but so far, no luck.

Does anyone here have a link to good settings for MGE XE that work swith the GOG version of Morrowind, and also a link to a version of MGE XE that is compatible with the GOG version of Morrowind GOTY?

Thanks. JJ
There is only one version of MGE XE, which can be found here: https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/41102

And it works perfectly with the GOG version. First question: Where is the game installed? It should not be in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files(x86), better something like C:\Games.

You can also disable the MGE functions and only use it for setting the resolution and for the Script Extender, which is included in it. This option can be found in the "In-Game" tab Be sure to run the MWSE-Update.exe to make sure you get the latest version, which is required for many newer MWSE mods.

You don't need it, but I highly recommend it if only for drastically improved view distance. The original game whilst great has a "fog of war" that was designed around older slower CPU's and is way too short on today's hardware. Normally I simply disable all the shaders to keep it close to the original (plus I hate DoF, Eye Adaptation, etc, effects anyway), but enable "Distant Land" and set it to around 8.0 cells then click the "Distant Land Generation Wizard".

See attached pics as examples of 1x vs 4x vs 8x vs 16x Distant Land settings, and how it opens up the game so you can actually see where you're going. Personally I find 8x is the sweet spot for maximising distant without bogging the CPU down (remember Morrowind is a single threaded game).

Been a while since i played Morrowind. Working on my tool and seeing the internals of the game kinda put me off for a while. As well as nearly all npc's just stand around rather than moving/doing things.

I'd probably not touch Morrowind again unless there's a Total Conversion, a new world altogether. I don't need to be doing the same 10 quests in parallel and getting my character to 20th level again.
By the way, if the game is really installed in C:\Program Files or so, there is no need to uninstall it and do a fresh installation in a different folder, you can simply move the entire Morrowind folder to a different location, and it will still work. You can even have multiple Morrowind folders simultaneously which are all completely independent from each other, with the exception of a few settings that are saved in the registry.

True. Though you'd still need admin access to do the move. Though afterwards, doing patches and adding mods or the like would be FAR easier.

Not sure why you'd want to do multiple versions of Morrowind. Though if you could hard link files like in linux (hard link, meaning different files point to the same actual space, thus taking no extra space to do so) then i could see this working much better that way.

To have different mod configurations, or to have one just for testing mods, or if you want different languages because some mods only work in a certain language version (in my case, German and English) and so on... there are many reasons. You can use hard links, but the extra space should not really be an issue nowadays.
