I just looked, if any of the games I own received updates.
There I found this (see attachment)

First I thought I got a gift from GOG...but no, it's just another screw up.
They really have a run this last weeks.

So, what's this "Shadows: Awakening"?

I have it as well. I pre-ordered the game, when it was offered a while ago. Supposed to release on Friday. Perhaps you did as well and just forgot about it?

Nope,...definitely no pre-order from my side.
It's not really my kind of game.
As I said - at first I thought it would be another "free game" from GOG. :)

As Leroux noted, you get it free if you own Heretic Kingdoms. Do you have that? (I assume not though, since you said it isn't your kind of game).

Well, "Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms" somehow found its way into my account...don't ask - I find "new" games all the time.
Should never sit before a computer when I'm not entirely sober, I guess.

EDIT: I just checked, ... I bought "Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms"...back on September, 1st 2015.
Almost exactly three years ago...at a sale for 50% off...well, at least drunken me is not totally irresponsible. :D

I already owned Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms when I preordered Shadows: Awakening not knowing that I was already entitled to the game. Could you provide a link to substantiate this? I'm going to need some evidence to point to when I contact support to get a refund.

What about owners of the Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms?

"Owners of the original Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms will no doubt remember that they were promised ‘Book 2’ free of charge. Yes, that is right. However when I looked at getting heretic kingdoms, I was told there was a cutofff point I.e. You had to have brought before a certain date. This doesn't seem to be the case, so annoyingly I have missed out. One for the very distant future at a big sale I think.

Cool. I never knew about that.
I don't know how that business model can be financial feasible, but I definitely won't complain about a free game.
