Another problem is that AAA devs don't know when to leave a certain game alone. There are SO many games that just don't need MP, and the MP takes away from single player.
If it's meant to be Multiplayer, fine, let it be. But shoehorning MP into a single player game and screwing the story or forcing it online-only is what my specific problem with MP is.

I typically play single player games, though I do play multiplayer if the conditions are right and I find a decent community.

Regardless, some games are not suitable for singleplayer mode. RTS is made for multiplayer, and so is strip chess-by-mail.

I actually prefer that they make either a multiplayer or a singleplayer game. Trying to do both results in a crippled single player mode, since everything has to be designed to fit multiplayer. For this reason, I skip any game with multiplayer or co-op.

Well, I don't know about any great single player chess campaings, strip or otherwise, so you might be right about that, but the number of RTS games with great single player campaigns would seem to indicate it's a genre quite suitable for singleplayer.

GOG attracts single player users together, so you're like a sumo at a rice buffet asking other sumos if eating rice is odd.

Also, "long time gamer" and "one of my first true games was Vampire: The Masquerade" means you're either very young or you started gaming at an older age. You have modern tastes. And all of those seem to be fantasy, sci-fi, and action/adventure. So you don't seem to be into historical/role-play like Europa and Civilization for some reason. Dota has a lot of story actually. No other MOBA comes close to touching it's level of lore. The benefits of it and games like CS are that you don't need a time investment of leveling up and unlocking stuff to enjoy the complete game content. That's where a lot of the appeal is beyond the deep strategies and tricks involved at higher levels. How many games can you play for thousands of hours and still discover new things? :)

Me too, but mostly because I have ping too high for smooth gameplay for the multiplayer games that I like.

I play RTS in single player most. GoG even sell single player chess games. I don't think if there are any games that is not suitable for singleplayer.

To contribute to the discussion. I dig up a number of polls in the internet and most people prefer single player.

First of all I wish to thank everyone that replayed. I must confess that I didn’t expect that someone would reply and I was dreading that if someone would reply it would be … not very polite or nice.

It means much to me to know and to be able to talk to other gamers that are really into single-player.

Reading my post I realized that it can come over as very depreciative of MP. It was not my intention, I can understand why people play MP (leaderbords, etc.) and I have absolutely nothing against it. But it is not for me. But I suppose that MP-Players are more vocal (it is not a bad thing) and I had difficulties finding a place where the topic wasn’t (or hadn’t become) “the lack of multiplayer completely ruins the experience”.

So I’d like to thank everyone that replied, it was really beyond my expectations (but to be fair I posted on GOG because I felt that here are the biggest chances to encounter someone like me).

I regard Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption as one of my first true games because it really hit the spot for me.

Amusingly the first game I played was Wofenstein 3D and the second one was Doom. Then I played Mortal Kombat 2 and Need for Speed. And on a console that my brother got I met Super Mario Bros. I many games followed but I always felt something was missing. I must also say that where I lived was relatively hard to get games, I played what I could get and it was fun but …

So I guess you are right and wrong. I started playing the games that I like at an (for what now is perceived) older age but I’ve been playing games for much longer than that.

No. Not at all. You're not an oddity, not in the slightest. You like what you like, and what you like is pretty damned awesome. As evidenced by the replies you've gotten, I think it's pretty much safe to say that you're among many friends here.

I myself almost play and buy games exclusively on the strength of their single-player gameplay and/or their narrative. For example, I was quite happy to buy and play Wings of Liberty simply for its single-player campaign. As I hate people, and hate to be around people, I avoided Battle.net like the plague.

And incidentally, if anyone gives you grief over your preferences for gaming, you can tell them to fuck the hell off. I had one friend who routinely gives me a dismissive, judgemental look (the kind you'd imagine getting from a gossipy old lady in church) just because I haven't played many (or any) of the Mario/Zelda/Final Fantasy games when I grew up. (As if it was my fault that I had restrictive parents, and that somehow makes me less of a "genuine gamer" to her.) It got so bad that I ended up cutting her out of my life completely.

Odd thing for me is that I find e.g. 99% of online FPS games that I try completely boring and dull, and see no point to play them. E.g. the Counterstrike games, the Crysis 3 multiplayer demo I tried etc. This was true also in the old days when I tried playing Quake deathmatch, I got bored quickly.

But for some reason, Team Fortress games resonated with me. I am not even sure exactly why, is it because it has 9 different player classes which play very differently from each other, and that if I e.g. play an engineer, sometimes the game feels more like a first-person RTS or a tower defense game, where I try to keep the incoming enemy hordes in check with my cannon, and keep the cannon repaired. :)

I've also tried to play some RTS games and Diablo (co-operative) online, but they felt boring too. So for me online multiplayer has always just meant Team Fortress, and nothing else.

I'm a 99,5% single player gamer these days as well. MP just doesn't interest me much.

The only exception (0,5%) is when we arrange an old school style LAN party. You know the kind when you carry computers in the same place, play and eat a lot of pizza. We've had some difficulty to find suitable games for that lately though..
