BeatriceElysia: Hope it isn't GOG.

sanscript: Look at it this way (in short):

CD Project (later with Group) is the "Daddy".
CD Project RED (Game developer) is obviously the dominating big sister.
GOG (Digital Game Distributor) is the favourite son and brother.

CDP (Local Game Distributor for physical copies in Poland) was born in 1994, many years before GOG was even conceived, is the bastard son everybody hated that split from the family in 2014. CDP couldn't take care of himself, thus made the family loose face, money and respect, and are now shown to the ritual knife.

The End.
Thank you for the history lesson / soap opera. Very informative!

ChrisGamer300: No it's a former publishing and distribution arm in Poland, i mean it was part of CD Projekt once but haven't been for a few years if i remember right, CD Projekt Group doesn't lack money in fact they have been doing very well and can support GOG economically if they want to.
For a very long time it wasn't just a part of CD Projekt - it literally was CD Projekt. Things changed when they decided that they want to make games and not just publish them. Now, this has no effect on current CD Projekt or GOG, but it is unfortunate to see the company go away. Game prices have doubled here in Poland in the last 5 years, one of the reasons I don't buy new games any more. Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad if CDP stayed competitive.

No one misses buying physical game boxes more than me, but pretty much all new games sold retail require a Steam account anyway so they are worthless to me regardless of price or publisher.

That, and the lack of documentation in the box. Ok, many recent games don't require a "manual" anymore (in-game tutorial, etc.), but it could be anything - a "lore guide" e.g.).

There was a period (up until 2010 or something?) that you could get a nice physical edition (a modern "big box") if you bought the collector's edition. But they turned into 200€ boxes of toys....

Lord_Kane: CDP split after CDPR started making games [...]
While this part is technically true...
avatar
Lord_Kane: [...] (from what sources in english I could find this was either late 2013 or early 2014 around the time of the witcher's launch), [...]
...the original The Witcher came out in 2007, and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings was released in 2011. The third Witcher game was already well into development by "late 2013 or early 2014" (and didn't come out until the 2nd quarter of 2015).

Aye thanks for that clarification and yes i know this has no effect on the CDP group today, shame to see game prices rise in price so much though and i guess games have been expensive in Poland even before that ? As i live in western europe the prices has been fairly stable for most part but what eastern europeans (or central geographically) pay has always seemed more expensive in comparison to what you earn, luckily there's plenty of sales going around nowadays.

Early on games were absolutely ridiculously expensive here. Combine that with the fact that in the early 90s piracy was still basically legal in Poland, and you have this weird thing were for a whole generation of gamers orignal games were highly coveted as something special, while at the same time piracy was an absolute norm with no stigma attached to it.

Back in the day I didn't really pay much attention to who the publishers were, but I think it was mostly CD Projekt that turned things around with affordable, quality releases. Their release of Baldur's Gate is something of a landmark thing in Poland, a popcultural icon in and of itself, irregardless of the game itself. I don't even like Baldur's Gate and still I can quote that polish dub as if I were a fan :D

I thought so still nice to see prices has improved if slowly and not enough so far, hell even regional pricing when it has been implemented has seen mixed results from what i have heard in many countries. I have to say it would be good if prices could be lower in countries that pay ridiculous prices for what they earn but i guess it's not in the interests of large publishers, sadly many independent developers don't care either.

Ah Baldur's Gate, personally i happen to like it but then i am sort of an crpg fanatic that enjoy things like stat crunching, character builds and convoluted rule systems especialy AD&D, still nice to see it had a positive effect even if it's not everyones cup of tea.
