Studying the anatomy of space demons.

Doom 3: BFG Edition is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 75% launch discount.
Back to reclaim its FPS throne, Doom 3 adds a strong dose of claustrophobic horror into the series' timeless cocktail of explosive action, horrific enemies, and ultra-violent massacre.

The BFG Edition is the game's remastered version, containing DOOM, DOOM II, DOOM 3, and DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil, as well as The Lost Mission.

Feeling nostalgic or just awfully trigger-happy? Check out our Bethesda shooters sale.
The 75% discount will last until August 28, 1 PM UTC.
This is serious business now!

I can run Quake 4 (based on the original Doom 3) on my laptop just fine with everything maxed out. Derp 3 BFG Edition crashes to Desktop IMMEDIATELY. I can't even see the company logos! What an abortion! Bring the original here, PRONTO!
As others have stated, the original Doom 3 + ROE would be nice to have on here also. In saying that, at least this version is on here for those who want it.
I haven't read through the whole thread, but Doom 2 was explicitly modified in this compilation to make it sellable in Germany.

Dogmaus: I gave in and bought everything. Now I have every iD and Bethesda game here on GOG. I just need the time to play all this. And I know it's been said all over the threads but I really would rejoice in seeing the Heretic and Hexen games here as well.

dudalb: Heretic and Hexen were not included when Bethesda bought out ID. They are owned by another company. But agree that GOG should make deal to bring them here.
Interesting, what other company would that be?

The Heretic and Hexen series were developed by Raven Software and published by id Software, so they should have been id's IP, and therefore they should now be Bethesda's IP. If they're not, the only thing I can think of is that somehow the developer bought the IP from id before Bethesda bought out id. Raven Software is a subsidiary of Activision, so if Bethesda doesn't own the IP, it more than likely belongs to Activision.

The situation appears to be a little complicated. Heretic, Hexen, its expansion and Hexen 2 are available on Steam with Bethesda as the publisher. However Hexen 2 expansion and Heretic 2 (the games made after Raven was bought by Activision) are not available anywhere. There were also some problems at one point when Wolfenstein (2009) was taken down from Steam.
Just bought it. Pretty good release, considering there is source for it, to build Linux version.

Yeah, upon buying and trying it out I have to say I don't like the BFG Edition. I didn't think the changes would be that bad, but right off the bat I don't like the tons more ammo it throws at you. That combined with the level changes and removed enemy encounters is gonna make the game too easy I can already tell. If I could get a refund I would, but I suppose I won't be able to given i've already downloaded and installed in this case so i'm out $5.

In any case, i'm gonna echo others and request the original versions and post wishlist links.

^ The reason for the extra ammunition in Doom 3 and RoE is thanks to absolute laziness. The "Lost Mission" add on was intended to be faster paced with more action and ammo. Instead of separating the ammo properties between the add on and the base games everything has the higher ammo pick ups of the Lost Mission.

As a huge fan of id Software and Doom 3 I was disgusted by the laziness of the BFG edition. While I'd never claim Doom 3 to be in the survival horror genre, it WAS influenced by titles like system shock and it had a slower and creepier pace.

People bitched and moaned about the flashlight mechanic but it added to the tension when you had to decide whether to take the flashlight out and have better visibility or keep the gun out and have a harder time seeing.

Combined with faster movement and the massive ammo drops of the little add-on mission and they ruined the experience of the originals.

The only reason I'd recommend anyone pick up the BFG edition is for the exclusive content. The Lost Mission isn't great, but its more action. No Rest For the Wicked for Doom 2 is a pretty good add on for Doom 2, previously only available on the XBLA version of Doom 2.

If Bethesda/id only allowed GOG to sell the BFG Edition... shame on them. If GOG was only after the BFG Edition or made no attempt to get the original versions... shame on them. While many people come here for DRM free content my only interest in this site is for the preservation of classic titles... not the shitty cash grab fuck up rereleases of them. Doom 3 is a great game that deserves better.

Edit: And I didn't even bother going into the heavy censorship of Resurrection of Evil, with the butchering of the hazmat sequence and the removal of arcade machines.

Speaking of, Heretic, Hexen, Hexen 2 I'm so tempted by the actually great deal on STEAM for the collection. But seeing this recent release here, maybe I should wait. I'm also eager to try Commander Keen, seeing how many people praise it.

Checking out Bethesda's catalogue, I also noticed Hunted: The Demon's Forge, which was developed by inXile so I will check it out, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, and finally Rage, the other bastard child of id Software. I'd hope for them to end up on GOG, but seeing the low ratings makes me think GOG would reject them, so maybe I'll end up getting them on STEAM... yuck.

Actually Rage has mostly positive reviews, and seeing that it uses the same engine as Doom 3 BFG, I'm confident it will eventually be released here.
I actually quite enjoyed RAGE, though it does have plenty of flaws. The animation and movement of enemies is brilliant. Combat is kind of like a dance of death.

I also laugh when people talk about the 'standards of GOG' when they let trash like the BFG edition on here.

As for the engine, RAGE uses id Tech 5 (plenty of complaints over texture loading) while Doom 3 and BFG edition uses id Tech 4. That said, some elements of 5 were apparently used in the BFG edition, though it remains primarily id Tech 4.

Well, Hunted: The demons forge, I have it on disc, and to be fair only played it for a few hours. It was dull, predictable cliched, over scripted. There was no real exploration or anything, you just move along a linear path taking out beasts on the way.
Call Of Cthulhu however was an excellent game (at least the first half, second half dropped off a fair bit). Well worth playing if you can get it running.
Read an article some time back where inXile blamed Bethesda meddling for how Hunted came out. Believe the original intent was more of an RPG but Bethesda wanted a fantasy Gears of War.

Have a love/hate relationship with Bethesda. I honestly think they're the best AAA publisher out there. They give devs chances with ideas that no other publisher would risk. They also pull a lot of BS like the BFG edition and paid mods.

I wish Bethesda would allow me to buy Heretic, Hexen and Hexen 2. As far as I know they are and always were fine to buy in Germany, but apparantly they are playing it safe by trying to avoid doing business with German customers whenever possible, no matter whether there are any issues or not. :(

Rage isn't bad at all, it's just a bit odd, in that it's half shooter, half racing game, and it doesn't really excel in either, but it's still fun. IIRC, the levels are often a bit corridor-like, but you also have some limited options to play with the environment, like setting fire to puddles of oil while enemies stand in them or something like that (like in Bioshock). What's not so good about it is that the levels are often recycled, e.g. you go through the same level twice, just the other way around and with different enemy placement. And the ending is next to non-existent, the most anti-climactic I've ever seen in a game, it's almost as if the game just stops. But you don't really play this for the story anyway. The setting is a bit similar to Borderlands and Mad Max.

Hunted is a mediocre corridor shooter / Gears of War clone with simple gameplay and a bit ugly grey-brownish washed-out graphics, but I actually enjoyed it as a casual distraction. If you don't expect it to be anything better than it is, it can still be fun. (Also, it has the voice of Laura Bailey in it. In an interview Brian Fargo complained that they had no say in the casting of the voiceactors, but I actually thought the voice-acting was the best part of the game.)

I'm tempted by Call of Cthulhu, but it seems that it's very prone to game-breaking crashes on modern systems, and some claim that the Steam version is less compatible with unofficial patches than the retail version due to some kind of protection on it. No idea if that's true.
