Thanks for the heads up. I can't decide if this is really good news (open source!) or really bad news (bought it last year and have barely played it).

I wonder if this means that GOG will make the game free?

Does it include the expansion pack too?

Did I understand right the developer (and publisher) has been inactive quite a while, ie. the game is in that sense pretty much abandoned? And no I am not talking about piracy as in "abandonware".

Interesting news in the sense that the game is still quite highly priced (23€ on Steam, I presume the same on GOG)...
Back in the bad old days, games tended to crash my system a lot (wine or native). In the mean time, I have become so used to the stability that if a game takes my system down, it freaks me out. Star Ruler 2 is one of two gog games I own that take my system down. Well, maybe they just freeze X, but it's the same effect as I no longer have multiple machines to deal with such a situation. Here's hoping that open sourcing this game will allow me to find out why this is happening, and finally play it.

Used to crash on my system a lot too. Then I found out this game needs that latest drivers for your graphics card to work properly - didn't matter if every other game would run fine.

As for the game itself - I loved it. Now I can use the source code to cheat and not have to wait 1000 years real time to build multi-galaxy sized starships >:D

Yes, it does.

I doubt it. Several other games available here for purchase have been fully or partially open sourced in the past. Open sourcing parts of the code does not mean they're releasing the game as freeware, even though in this case it seems most of the game minus the music is there in the repos, so you could just build it yourself if you don't care about that.

Download direct: https://github.com/powercat/StarRuler2-Source/releases/download/1.01/Star.Ruler.2.7z
NOTE: It's weight around 545 Mb and then uncompress only near 1200 Mb (1.2 Gb)

Only for Windows users.
Thanks, I'm sorry in a way that they were not making enough with the game. I would have bought it during the 2017 sale but I didn't knew there wasn't any more DLCs planned. Oh well, I'll nab it at some point in the future when it's on sale for the soundtracks and to give what little support I can to the devs.
