Hi All,
Within Win 10, anyone else dealing with a Ddraw error unable to launch 640x480x16 message when launching either SS2 or Resource War?

I have searched online and am unable to find a fix. I have tried the following without success:

* edit the ini file trying to get around the launch issue. The only promising setting was making the game launch without full screen enabled. The game then launches however in in a very small box (no matter what res I have set) in the top-left hand section of the screen. Alt+enter does nothing. The graphics are pink and green as well.

* Tried all compatibility options
* reinstalled direct x 9c (dxdiag says I have 12 installed).
* Set the exe as admin
* multiple ddraw wrappers

Both Sudden Strike and SS3 work with a little editing of the ini file, however; SS2 is being extremely stubborn. If anyone has a fix for this issue, please advise.

This is the Sudden Strike: The Complete Anthology digital DRM-Free version.

Thanks!

Not the GOG version? From where then? Do they have a support contact?

You have I assume:
Enabled directplay
Installed outside windows folders
Installed the appropriate directx - if you brought it here then it comes in the package
Try dgVoodoo 2

try also right click on .exe file, property, compatibility, and set 16 bit mode for that game

Thanks all.

@ timppu
I purchased the package on Amazon since I checked Gog and found each is sold individually and for a higher price.

@ nightcraw1er.488:
Enabled directplay
* Yes, it is enabled per Dxdiag
Installed outside windows folders
* Yes, I placed it in multiple areas from the root of C to C:\Games
Installed the appropriate directx - if you brought it here then it comes in the package
* Dxdiag states I have 12, however; I did install 9c as well.

Thanks for your assistance though.

@ FulVal
Try dgVoodoo 2
* will do
try also right click on .exe file, property, compatibility, and set 16 bit mode for that game
* Yes, I tried this - no go.

Thanks for your help!

My standard advice is to contact Support. If you and they work together but it doesn't get resolved, you're entitled to a refund.

EDIT: Oh, sorry, I didn't read it all at first that it wasn't a GOG game.

Concerning directx, you may have several versions installed, however the game may need a specific version you don't have installed, check with support where you brought it, one of the good things buying here is gog include the right version of all the components so you don't have to worry.

Thanks again. Yeah, the one time I choose to go with Amazon instead of GOG for a DRM-Free title and this is the result - I have learned my lesson. Amazon has now issued a refund. I think I will wait a while (given the issues I had with the game) to even think of getting it again, even on Gog. I just have a bad taste in my mouth right now towards this title.

Found solution.
(tested on Apple M1 Pro, Sequoia 15.3.2)

1. Installed GOG version of Sudden Strike through PortingKit
2. Download cnc-ddraw alternative for ddraw.dll file from Github (i found it via search box, from user FunkyFr3sh). You need compiled zip archive (i found it in readme section). It should contain files: cnc-ddraw config.exe, ddraw.dll, ddraw.ini, and folder Shaders)
3. Inside PortingKit hover the SuddenStrike2 cover and click on Settings button appered. Choose 'Show in Finder'
4. For me it showed me my ~/Applications folder. Right click on Sudden Stirke 2, select 'Show Package Contents'
5. Inside SS2 package folders go Contents > drive_c > GOG Games > Sudden Strike 2
6. Copy cnc-ddraw config.exe, ddraw.dll, ddraw.ini, and folder Shaders from cnc-ddraw.zip (see p.2) right inside SS2 folder. System should ask you should it rewrite ddraw.dll, approve it.
7. IMPORTANT: Stay there in the folder. Right click on cnc-ddraw config.exe and choose 'Open with > Porting Kit'. Look at your Mac Dock, it will show you the icon of cnc-ddraw config. Click it and you'll see the settings window with popped up message asking you if you ready to rewrite winecfg (see screenshot). Press 'Yes'. Then you can close the window.
8. Now you can start SS2 from PortingKit and it will work fine.

(ps: if you need non-english version, choose 'advanced' while installing, it will let you choose the installer file and you could download the version you need via Web interface of GOG, choosing needed language by dropdown menu)
