t made an already dreary evening drearier. just finished the 'crookback bog' thread last night and it really captures a great sort of 'halloween legend' vibe that even most horror games lack.

the long and short is this:

older lady seeks the help of three ancient witches who live in a swamp because she's pregnant with the child of a man who's child she does not wish to bare. they cast a spell on her which saps her life/energy thereby aborting the fetus. in return for their help the older lady is forced to essentially play shepherd to the witches cattle, in this case being a ramshackle village at the heart of the swamp populated by orphan children (it's implied that they're eaten only toward the end of the questline, AND the fact that she's forced to knowingly tend and fatten the kids for the witches consumption in return for an abortion adds a super dark karmic twist which drives her mad).

also, every npc in the game is miserable, starving, about to be eviscerated, or about get their soul ingested by a mire beast from the pits evil.

anyway, the witcher 3 is an awesome rpg even though it sort of ruined my evening with its super dark vibes. totally worth playing if you haven't.

Is this a post about the witcher 3? What does that have to do with survival horror? Sorry, just a bit lost with your post.

Apparently he did a spooky quest in Witcher 3 and thought to share the fact with the rest of the world.

And everyone enterting the thread has their "Biohazard"/"Resident Evil" recommendation handy, only we just got witcher rolled.
The Suffering 1+2, Darkwood, Alone in the Dark series, Subterrain, Outlast etc. I still miss Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Also ObsCure and Cryostasis. :/

Yes, I extracted my trusted "Play Silent Hill", but now I don't know how to use it.

PainOfSalvation: ...Alone in the Dark series
Alone in the Dark (1992) was awesome game, i haven't played anything close to similar since then. All other games in series are very weak in comparison. I doubt any current gamer can withstand the obscure graphics of original, it was questionable even back then.
Pathologic
Darkwood
The Thing
Nocturne (AMAZING)
Blair Witch Project Trilogy (AMAZING 1ST PART)
Resident Evil 1,2,3 old series
American Alice Mc Geee (AMAZING)
Good suggestions. It is a shame they don't have Silent Hill 1 or 2. But gog has a good Silent Hill from 2004 (SH: The Room). look it up in the search.

Love this genre, always fun to play, but can be very hard at times! Resident Evil games were never a piece of cake to finish without any cheating (looking up when you get stuck).
