I've thought about actually using the DVD covers some time. Originally, I was put off because of the unprofessionally bland design of the back covers in the original post, but the ones in the cover list topic have artwork on the back, and it looks very nice. I'd have to agree that these should become official. It's already a good argument against people who prefer something a little more tangible on their shelves, since all the games on GOG can easily be turned into physical copies this way. :D

It's been a while since I printed any DVD cases. I have a loose copy of Duke Nukem 3D for the Saturn, and many years ago I edited the cover to fit on a DVD case, adding some Death Tanks to the artwork (since it included Death Tank Zwei, the primary reason for playing that port), it's one of a kind!


Getting access to a printer is harder than it used to be, and it certainly hasn't gotten any cheaper. Kinko's used to let me print posters and stuff, but I haven't seen one in a while,
and the last time I tried that they gave me guff about copyrighted material.

I'm not that good at editing stuff, though, and it's been a while, so I'm wondering about using these covers for slim DVD cases. All you'd need to do is change the spine, but is it easy to shrink it to the right size in an editor or the print settings, and would it really look okay?

one question if i may...this is for label measures 274 mm x 184 mm (10.8 in x 7.25 in)?
in other words for case measures 135 mm x 190 mm x 14 mm (5.3 in x 7.48 in x 0.55 in)?

The size of the GOG DVD covers (mine anyway) is 6.3 inches x 4.2 inches which was the size of the original covers. I upped the res on my covers to 300 ppi so they would print better (seems the originals were 72 or 96 ppi). The image must be sized to the actual cover size following the original printing instructions.

I use standard 8.5 x 11 inkjet paper or photo quality inkjet paper. I don't recommend using glossy photo paper as it tends to crack when bent around the cover frame (and it's too expensive IMHO). The matte photo quality paper works fine for me and I use something similar to this As long as it's a bright white the images are fine for covers, IMHO, if printed at high dpi settings. I wait for sales as 100 sheets can be found 2 packs for the price of one and lasts for years. Be aware that these inkjet photo quality papers usually have only one side that you can print on. The other side is usually a yellowish color with the print side a bright white color.

Myself and other members discussed making the covers full size but, IIRC, we decided to leave them at the original size for consistency with the only change being the increase in ppi. This was to keep the size consistent without having to remake all the covers and to utilize the printing instructions which worked really well with MS Paint. I posted some instructions once for MS Word but I believe most ppl use MS Paint.

Yes, that is one of the original Desperados covers. I tried for a long while to find one that was high res. All the ones I found were small and 72 dpi. I tried several but the quality was just too poor to use. Even the one I did use was sorta low quality but . . .I used it rather than not having any cover available for the game . . . for those who want one.

If I find a better image for the cover, I'll gladly make one with that image and post it. I try to make as many covers as I can find for every game. Some games I can find several acceptable quality images . . . some I can't find even one image that is worth using. Some games have multiple covers for different regions which usually allows me to find maybe three or four good quality images. Anyway, I try to keep them fairly close to what the original was and make as many as I can find. Hope this helps . . . =)

Edit: Found my old Word 2k3 instructions, added images in case someone was curious. I will try to do a set of instructions for Word 2010 if I can find time.

Something to be aware of . . . many inkjet printers will not print these covers due to the large bottom margin they require to hold the paper while printing the bottom of the image. HP comes to mind, I believe the smallest bottom margin is .560 whereas these covers require a .150 bottom margin. Check you printers minimum margin requirement before spending a lot of time trying to print these covers.

Also, Epson changed their paper part numbers so the ones I mention may not be available except under a new name and number. Any Inkjet photo quality paper will do.

I should also confess to not using the covers other than as an extra that I save with the game files. When I get enough games to fill a DVD, I burn it and make a cover using the minimal ink cover which allows me to have around ten or twelve backup DVD's / cases for my GOG collection. . . =)
