Crosmando: Honestly when I first saw GOG I thought it was a piracy download site.
I have a superior who still thinks that. We've had our fair share of game developers who thought the same. It boggles the mind.

Yeah, they started asking for your real name and address. Apparently it's because of US tax laws, but thing is that they ask Europeans that too, who obviously don't follow US tax laws.
I'd understand it if it were for credit card purchases, but with steam wallet? Really?

Oh, and to top it off, Steam suffered from some data breaches in the past.

Been like this on Steam since I first went there 2014.
It's optional though. I always fill in "not required" in those datamining fields when buying something there. It has never been a problem.

Pax-Christi: I think if Valve cared so much about Linux and "open source", they should 'open source' the Steam client so that all the shady telemetry could be removed.
The only way this would happen is if a third party (some group of motivated individuals) reverse-engineered the functional suite of the client.

The reason the client is NOT open-source is fundamentally so that the proprietor (Steam) can control who has and how they access its assets.

Telemetry is essential for these Web 2 businesses; without it they'd be like television broadcasters in the 70s, relying on the public to fill in handwritten checklist surveys of what they watched the night before … so not very accurate nor very reliable, especially compared with realtime analytics. (Steam would probably sue the third party, too, for damaging their proprietary authority, or some such.)

It's just an old joke about a game where the objective is to not think of the game, hence being reminded of it is an automatic loss.
