MajicMan: And here is a list of others with videos to see games similar (though I don't agree all these are similar) but is is still a guide to check out 50gameslike

One more list to check out with a bunch of interesting games. Game Cupid Games like Blackguards 2
Thanks for bring up 50 Games Like... that's actually where I was looking when I started this thread. Great resource!

TentacleMayor: As for me, I couldn't be happier about getting rid of that RNG system that had plagued the series from the start. I was happy enough to see doomstacks gone, but ecstatic that you could no longer get the old ''ancient spearmen can beat Panzers if RNGsus wills it'' trope.
I have to give special mention to this post..... Indeed the most ridiculous thing i have ever seen in a game was a horse unit whack a tank with his sword, and the tank blew up! Curtesy of Civ4!!
And the truth is, there is enough 1% combat odds popping up in that game to annihilate all your high experience units if you let it - which is a damn shame considering how interesting the unit upgrade system is!

It would be helpful if they added some kind of code to simply ban a spearmen/swordsman from being able to defeat a tank.

I still haven't forget that time when my aircraft carrier got sunk by a barbarian galley in Civ3!

Those barbarians must have been from Grand Fenwick!
Guys, it's true that I have indeed mentioned the game once in this thread. But you guys should really try Field of Glory 2. It's a really unique TBS game equipped with some of the most innovative features based on the mechanics of how ancient battles used to work in the past. Moreover, if you were to head over to the Steam Community of this game, you'd find that many of the customer base of the game have even compared this game to the Total War series (although not all of them) and explained how they could no longer return back to the Total War series after playing this game.

I'm not trying to look down on the Total War series as I have never myself tried any of the games, but I'm just hoping that the things which I had mentioned in the first paragraph would at least motivate you guys to give Field of Glory 2 a try.
Here are some good ones from someone who spends his life only playing turn based games:

Eador:Genesis and Civilization are by far the best ones. I have spent entire years only playing these games. Civ 5 the most.
Eador: Genesis is just amazing in the amount of tactical options and character leveling possibilities. One guy made this game alone. Totally blew me away.

Before those two:
Heroes 3 (before Eador this was the best fantasy 4x)
Imperialism (the thinking mans Civ, but not as much replay value)
Fantasy Wars and Elven Legacy (Fantasy General remakes, like Panzer General but better unit leveling and more tactical options through magic spells)
Sots: The Pit (this is pure TBS combat and RPG leveling, amazing fun and replay value)

Some of the mentioned RPGs are pretty good TBS action like Fallout 1&2, Wizardry are pretty good, too.

Wow. What synchronicity.\! I was just looking at the Eador games. ;)
Battle Isle 2, such a fantastic game.

That and Battle of Wrestnoth are fantastic in my opinion.
Fantasy General II is coming soon, on GOG and on Steam. It looks good. I'm excited for this one.
King's Bounty series is pretty wonderful. They are charming but still strategic in nature.
