I sometimes need a break from FarCry 2, so why not play another FPS in the meantime?
So, lately I've been playing also Area-51. It is one of those games Midway released for free some years ago, I was reminded of them by some recent discussion on GOG.
http://www.mobygames.com/game/area-51_ It is a generic FPS, you can clearly see it was mainly developed with consoles in mind as it has very heavy autoaim and the gameplay seems to be mostly of the shooting gallery type, but I feel it is ok on PC too. It doesn't look like a 2005 game to me though, closer to early 2000. I rate e.g. FarCry 1 as a considerably better looking FPS. It feels quite easy too, but then I think it let me choose only Easy or Medium difficulty, so maybe the harder difficulties are not unlocked until you've completed the game with these easier ones? So consolish...
I feel a bit guilty playing it for free though. It is pleasant enough so that I would have gladly paid _something_ for it and probably the other free Midway games too (at least for the DRM-free versions), but oh well.
One hiccup with the game though, I get stu-stu-stu-stu-stutte-stutte-stuttering sound during the between-level narrator parts, but it is a minor gripe. Rest of the game seems ok running on Win7/64bit.
