I have a decent Internet connection. When using GOG Galaxy I have a very satisfying download speed. It usually fluctuates around 20-30 MB/s. Most of the time it's above 20 MB/s. It rarely hits 15 MB/s. I like to use the offline installers however. My download speed of these usually fluctuates around 5-8 MB/s. Sometimes it can get as low as 3 MB/s. Occasionally (when the server load is low?) it can rise above 10 MB/s, but it's still much less than with GOG Galaxy. So what's your download speed of offline installers? Is it normal that I get 5-8 MB/s?

Some of the GOG file servers are starved for bandwidth I guess. I usually get very satisfactory speeds at a couple of different locations, no Galaxy (other than space games doh).

You know that you can download the offline installers via GOG Galaxy, right?

Satisfactory means how much? There's clearly a problem with the web browser downloads. What's the reason, I have no idea.

Yeah, I know that. Out of curiosity I've tested it a few seconds ago. I reached a whooping 70 MB/s, but... a few seconds later it fell down to 0 MB/s. After a second it was back above 60 MB/s. And so on. I believe it's not an issue with my connection. I've tried to download from other sites and the download speed was stable.

Is that megabits or megabytes? The latter isn't that bad. The "b" letter points to megabits however, which is really poor.

Just checking, as you seemed to get good download speeds with Galaxy when downloading + installing. Personally, I no longer use Galaxy as I only run Linux these days (I haven't bothered with the unofficial Galaxy client 'Comet').
My speed? Pegged at the 10Mb/s that is the limit here (faster available if you pay). At home it usually is 6x faster up to the full limit at favourable hours. I think I never downloaded any big games anywhere else.

I do not use Galaxy.

Just to clarify, are you talking about your download speed of offline installers or your Internet bandwidth in general?

Full speed = what is paid for at this location = 10megabits per second.

I admit not checking the speed when I downloaded a game just a few days ago, terribly sorry but it cannot have been much, if any, under maximum speed.
I get my connection's full download speed via browser or Downloader: 768kbps.

aaaahahahaaa.

crap.

Ok, so now we know that not everyone has this problem. Maybe it depends on the region from which you download, but it still puzzles me why I get a much higher speed through GOG Galaxy. Not that it's a problem. :) Better to have a good speed via Galaxy than to not have it at all. I don't mind using the client to download offline installers, but my curiosity isn't satisfied. :)

Edit: Oh, you said about megabits, not megabytes... I didn't notice that at first. So still everyone can possibly reach a bottleneck around 5-8 Megabytes/s without Galaxy.

It must be a real pain to download anything bigger at this speed. It's even hard for me to imagine. The games have a tendency to take up to 100 GB these days.

Certainly has made an effect on my buying habits. Figure I can safely download 3 or 4 GB overnight, so that's kinda where I put my limit; weekends I can go larger. Has also hurt with the desire to check out various game mods; little mods are not a problem, but complete makeovers weighing in at several GB... not so much.

The bright spot is my occasional business trip, where I'll sometimes encounter a nice fat connection at the hotel du jour. When I find one, I download all the updated installers I can, and will sometimes hit up the catalog to look for interesting titles. The timing of the 10th Anniversary sale was perfect in that regard: came right when I was on the road for a week. Grabbed around 45 GB worth of game files.

But even at that low speed, the connection works. I just don't click many random youtube links from the forum. ; )

Considering that, I really shouldn't be complaining about my 8 MB/s. People have a tendency of getting used to good things very quickly. That's my case I guess.

I agree. It's better to have a slow connection than not have it at all. I heard that US technological giants (Google, Facebook etc.) have some plans to provide free Internet for people which have difficulties with connection. I hope that your data transfer will improve in the future.

Nothing wrong with wanting better, right?

In lieu of the really good speeds, folks like you and I will get by with a little patience and planning. One nice thing about gOg is that we have multiple download options, so if one method is going slowly we can always try another.
Holy mackeral! I get max 2-3 megs, using browser.
