Wow, I'd thought originally to write to the 2 or 3 people who replied, but now it seems overwhelming. Thank you all for sharing!

Frazetta is "the master." When I was young, I didn't connect with his work, but I couldn't discount it; his work was always striking and powerful. As I got older, I've come to seriously appreciate his work.

Michael Whelan is "the face" of 80's and 90's scifi novels. I could look at his work all day. His work alone has sold me many paperbacks.

Larry Elmore is D&D to me. I can't say I love all of his work -- in fact there are a number of pieces I do not personally like -- but IMO his best work is incredible... especially that sense of motion. Yeah, I have to get some Elmore art! There was an ok documetary recently about the art and artists behind the early years of D&D... Eye of the Beholder?

I enjoy many of the artists who have made careers from Lord of the Rings (or used it as a springboard) but the Hildebrandt Bros are by far my favorite. Their storybook style is mesmerizing... and got me to buy the first Shannara books as well (they painted the covers).

I have a number of illustrators and comic artists whom I love. They could be on this list -- Kaluta, Vess, Gianni, Wrightson (who I was lucky enough to call a friend), etc -- but I'd be writing all day

And yes, having just recently looked into Warhammer, there is some amazing work (and artists) around those series... although I'm most partial toward Warhammer Fantasy artists.

Anothername: Do you have 1-2 names of modern ones? When my areas of interest became more mainstream its art became more and more dull. Would be neat to learn about a few modern ones that still have some bite & like to keep it sexy on occasion.
Other than Anne Stokes? Mario Wibisono, and after wondering what that was when I saw him working for Legend of the Cryptids I rather stopped remembering names and eventually even gave up looking, overwhelmed by the list of good artists I got by checking who did work for that.
And wouldn't you consider Wu Shuang modern too? But thought he basically gave up quite a long time ago.

Ah, yes. Naturally. An artist whose watermark or signature I can't even spot.

Hey, thanks :)

Yeah, I guess hes modern. At least a good deal more modern than the others I mentioned. And while he does not flood his deviant art gallery as much as I'd love to there is always something new when I look it up every now and then. It would probably easier to follow him if I knew any Chinese :P
For some reason I didn't think at all of comics before. And there's a lot of great fantasy art in the comics, obviously.
I was very impressed with Berni Wrightson's stuff from early Swamp Thing

I like P Craig Russel's more fairy-tale-ish art a lot

Charles Vess is a master

Of course Mike Mignola is always great, no one does dark fantasy like him

Go check out Bernie's Frankenstein (if you haven't already). Brilliant. I enjoy Swamp Thing -- and it was Bernie's creation -- but his Frankenstein is on a whole other level IMHO.

P. Craig Russell's The Ring of the Nibelung. Amazing. Along with Ring I'd suggest Alex Alice's Siegfried. Ok, I have to admit The Ring of the Nibelung is one of my favorite stories and I'm so disappointed that it has never had a proper translation to video games.
How can I not mention a friend of mine, Romain Lardanchet. I used to enjoy anything from Boris Vallejo, Ted Nasmith and Alan Lee (thanks to LoTR).
