morolf: Why not? If people want to discuss....
Because like with gaming clients, it's a pain in the butt to make accounts at a bunch of sites to talk about a bunch of different things....it makes more sense, generally speaking, to do as much in one place as is possible.

Breja: But then I don't really understand the whole "I want all my X in one place" mentality either. It's the Internet. The vast array of different places for everything is kind of the whole point.
With most sites needing accounts these days, it can be a pain to juggle a bunch of site addresses, logins, etc.

sidenote/query: what I don't understand is why those(generally speaking) who don't like certain topics (on any forum) don't just ignore/hide them.

Breja: Or at least it should be. Why instead it devolved into monolithic quasi-monopolies like YouTube, Steam and Facebook I will never understand.
As you said, the "all in one place mentality". Of course that said, I like/embrace competition and am glad some new sites are starting to pop up.

Because the ostrich strategy doesn't always work. Things you ignore don't always ignore you. I can happily ignore threads about anime or sports or growing turnips and it's all hunky-dory. But all this political crap has significantly harmed the forum and the community. Before people started arguing politics here it used to be just about the nicest, most civil place you could ever find online. Didn't even have or need any moderation. And then the politics and the culture wars and whatnot started and it got to the point where they had to institute rules, hire mods, and a lot of good people already just up and left tired of all the toxicity, insults, personal grudges.

So no, unfortunately we can't just happily ignore this crap, any more than we can ignore someone setting our house on fire.

Breja: Rule or no rule, I will never understand what makes anyone think "hey, this video game store forum looks like a perfect place to discuss politics and the war on terror". Do you just stop and go, "Wow! It is amazing how fucking crazy I really am!"?
where else could he make a thread about it?

Usually they do, though, and when they don't: that's what reporting is for

I've been here on and off since near the beginning. This forum has had it's share of bad posts/posters since near day one, and also even without said topics the forum has started to turn into a ghost town ever since about 2017-2018. Hmm, I wonder what happened around then to cause that....
