I just recently spotted Carmaggedeon for PC, unfortunately I use a mac....I know I should probably ditch it, but I've been playing a lot of abandonware with DOSBOX and it works quite well. I'm wondering though, if I bought and downloaded Carmaggedeon on GOG and tried to run it with DOSBOX, would it still work? I figure it being old enough it shouldn't be a problem, but there is always the issue of it being a completely different file that won't be compatible or some weird issue with copyright protection.

Has anyone downloaded games on GOG and had it work on DOSBOX, or would it be a waste of time and money? I'd love to know, thanks in advance.

I guess there's a pretty good chance, given that the GOG version of Carmageddon comes bundled with DOSBox (ver. 0.74) and that it runs through this DOSBox, being a DOS game.

I have downloaded and there was a problem that I didn't think to mention, the setup file for the game cannot run on dos. I got an error message reading "this program must run under Win32". Doing a little research that pretty much means that I'm screwed if I'm not running the file through a version of Windows. Thanks for the help anyway.

I guess I could always try getting my money back. *bummed* :(

The setup program just unpacks the files onto your computer. Perhaps you could use a windows emulator such as Wine for Mac to run the installer once and get the game files. Or perhaps you know someone who has a Windows computer just to unpack the files, which you could then copy to your Mac.

Anyhow, sorry if I misled you.

There are ways (at least in Linux using Wine, I think) to "install" the game, after which you can run it on Dosbox. If you can use Wine or something similar to install the game, after that you could use the game files with Dosbox to run it on your Mac.

Thanks but, there seems to be WAY too many steps involved in getting this program WINE to run on my MAC. Not to say it can't be done but I don't think I'm that much of a nerd to want to mess with source code and the like. I'm just a casual gamer for the most part. I'll give it a shot..but I can't see myself figuring out how to jump through a bunch of technical hoops in order to play one game.

Another option is for you to install the game on someone else's computer (that is running Windows), and then copy the files over to your one to run in Dosbox.

Check out if innoextract is any easier, it should be able to extract the files without running the installer. I would also be amazed if there wasn't projects for mac that help you out with pre-built wines.

It would be nice if all the DOS games here had a zip file with just the game files themselves in the extras.

Isn't there some kind of innoextract for mac?

I remember that some time ago (after the protected installers issue), I unpacked some DOS games (under Windows) with innoextract for shit and giggles, and I could run the game on DOSBOX. I think it was Blake Stone or Blood or something.

Anyways, I googled, and it seems it may work for you.

Investigate this and, if you are lucky, you'll be able to get the files and run them via DOSBOX.

Old DOS games sold on GOG.com use DOSBox or ScummVM, so they will run perfectly fine with the DOSBox release available from the project's official site. No doubt about that.
