and as it turns out 42,94% users that participated in said survey have windows 10 installed

windows 7 slipped to 30,61%
and 8 slipped to 10,07%

mac os X hovers around 3,60%

linux continues to be a nonentity with 0.80% considering all the noise surrounding valve's steam machines and steam os is a tad surprising

Which is is, 42% or 94%? Make up your mind; there is a rather huge difference between the two figures.

(I don't use either Windows or Steam, so there's no way I would be counted in that figure.)

we (ie the dutch ) usually use the comma as a seperator

That convention is very confusing to someone used to the period as separator, especially if you have a number like 3,141. (Is that number close to π, or is it over 3 thousand?)

Also, I noticed that your post isn't consistent about the choice of separator; your Windows 8 and 7 and Linux figures use periods, while your Mac OS figure uses a comma.

The context usually makes it clear in any event. Eg, a town with a population of 3,141 or a bicycle that weighs 3,141 kg. Or 42,94% of users :)

Some countries use a comma for decimals and . as separator, like: 3.141,0 €

I'm going to take a wild guess here and say most countries use a period as a decimal point.

As for the topic, I could mention that, regarding Linux users:

Some users refuse to use proprietary software. Those users would not use Steam or GOG. (Note that this forum would not be a good place to survey such users, as they would not have accounts on this site.)

Some users are willing to make exceptions to the rule in some cases. For instance, I am willing to play proprietary games (though I would still prefer them to be open source). However, many Linux users dislike DRM, and are therefore far more likely to use GOG (and, in the past, Humble Bundle) than Steam. (This is the category I fit into.)

Then, of course, there are the pragmatists, who don't care about FOSS and the ethical issues around DRM. It is only those who, if gamers, would likely use Steam.

the hardware survey does not show up in Big Picture Mode, which means Steam OS & steam machines are not even included in the statistics

then there is another long standing bug about the the survey showing up less often on Linux in general (and in a lot of cases never)

add to that, that many linux users additionally run steam under wine which doesn't help the Linux percentage either.

so basically, you can just throw the linux statistics into the garbage bin :p

it would be a lot more helpful if valve would track game installations(ie game x installed on platform y by z users) instead of these global statistics.
But as far as I recall developers only get the platform on which the game was bought, which isn't really the most helpful stat either.

The map in that article bothered me because it's people who use delimiters, not the land. Countries such as Russia, Greenland and India have outlying population densities that create confusion when representing social things like this with a standard map.
