Originally it would give 2 clicking sounds and stop spinning the disc. I opened it up, found out one of the rails for the dvd drive was caked with dirt. Cleaned it, now it reads all discs I have. Got really freaking lucky there.
You are talking about a game system right?

I'm amazed that's all it took though. Before, getting a game to boot up was a complete bitch. I almost bought a replacement laser assembly for it.

EVERY time I read that header I think about old crashed or incompatible HDs. Must be a old trauma I didn't know I had. Crashed discs filled with vintage porn or something... :/

Seems to be all good after cleaning the rails. The left one was caked with dirt.
I tried to open up my old fat PS2 to give it a good dusting and cleaning, but had trouble trying to take it apart. Not to mention finding all these stickers that when you pull them off they suddenly say VOID VOID VOID everywhere referring to the warranty.

Know of a good disassembly/reassembly video or source for the PS2?

Check iFixIt, that site has good guides to open Sony consoles - Sony TV Console Repair
Teardown might have some differences between revisional models but I think those guides are handy even then. :)
I wonder if I could fix my NES. :P

I'd need to know how to get rid of that bullshit spring loader.
