Seeing that the Red Baron Pack is upcoming in the flash sale I would like to ask my fellow gamers which game featured on GOG they think offers the best and most thrilling dogfights (primarily) in a historical setting.

I'm not sure if I'm thinking of Red Baron but I vaguely remember a WWI game in which, much to my chagrin, the planes were terribly prone to crashing. I'm not looking for something that realistic. :P

It's not a GOG game, but I own Pacific Fighters on DVD and it's a decent WW2 era fighter game sim.

I've never played it, but I know a few people who were big on flight sims "back in the day" and IL-2 is VERY highly regarded. It is, however also quite "realistic" so I'm not sure how that works for you.

I know I've played a fair number of WW1 dogfight games and I recall having the same problem. Played a lot of Wings on the Amiga, I think Red Baron, I recall that issue, but a lot of it has to do with the genre. The guns are mounted between the wings, so in order to aim to hit anyone you have to fly right at them. Part of the art of a WW1 game is knowing when to turn away.

Cool, thanks skeletonbow. I just looked it up and found out it's based on the <i>IL-2 Sturmovik</i> engine and now that I've read a few of the GOG reviews for that particular one I'm thinking it might be a game to my liking.

That would have been my suggestion as well. Played it on the Amiga, it really simulated the wire-and-canvas-death-trap experience of flying a WWI plane.

given that some of the other Microprose flight sims are on GOG, Knights of the Sky stands out as a glaring omission. Perhaps rights issues prevent it? anyway I'd love to see a modern update of this one!

I'm not entirely sure but I don't think so. It definitely was an Amiga game.
Anyway, I bought Red Baron for my father (a now retired pilot) but he never did play it much (or any other game for that matter). If that's the game in which I constantly wrecked the machines I was probably just crap at controlling the damn things.

I've also got IL-2 Sturmovik on DVD and IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 on GOG, as well as Lockon Modern Air Combat. Great sims. Got all the rest of the flight sims GOG has on catalogue too I think.
Be sure to check out Lockon Modern Air Combat too.

One thing I would love to see show up on GOG is the Janes Longbow Gold and Longbow 2 Gold AH64 simulators. Those were amazing.

I'd love to give it a go. Yeah, realism might be an issue (although it's been ages since I last played any kind of simulator so hopefully I've grown more adept by now) but Wolfox' review (currently the third most helpful) gives me hope:
It's also very approachable on the difficulty level, due to a wide range of settings, to accomodate both the newbies and the hardcore flight sim fans.

I'll look into it and see what the issue might be. Could be GOG just isn't familiar with it.

It's is, and great atmosphere too. The DOS version actually looks quite good too, which is unusual since usually the Amiga version is the best.
