Say, I'm a fan of Conan Doyle, which includes his Holmes stories. But I've read these very long ago, and I can't remember a detail.

When playing the frogwares adventure games, I noticed that, in Holmes' apartment, one wall is riddled with bullet holes, forming some initials (J R ?). The rest of the apartment is filled with details relative to other stories (a picture of the Reichenbach falls, the dancing men, a napoleon sculpture, etc), but... I really can't remember what these bullet holes refer to. Does it ring a bell to any holmesian forumer here ?

Are you sure it's not VR?

Are you sure it is JR, he does shoot the wall in one of the movies with VR (Victoria Regina - Our Queen Victoria), they did take a lot from the books to create the movies and I should imagine that it is VR instead of JR. I haven't read any Homes in a few year now, need to reread them in all honesty, absolutely captivating addictive investigations.

Dr. Watson clears this up. From "The Musgrave Ritual":

I have always held, too, that pistol practice sshould distinctly be an open-air pastime; and when Holmes in one of his queer humours would sit in an arm-chair, with his hair-trigger and a hundred Boxer cartridges, and proceed to adorn the opposite wall with a patriotic V. R. done in bullet-pocks, I felt strongly that neither the atmosphere nor the appearance of our room was improved by it.

The "V. R." would be "Victoria Regina," or Queen Victoria, I assume. I've never played that game, so if it's J. R., I can't help.

I meant Artie.

Doyle ripped off Holmes from Poe.
That's not to bemoan the storys or the writing, they are true classics, just slightly unoriginal.

Not "JR" but "VR", "Victoria Regina". It's from "His Last Bow". Holmes was using his wall for target practice and shot the initials of the late Queen into it. Some say this was not much of a fitting tribute and that it means something else. Nobody has come up with a less unsatisfactory explanation, though.
Okay, thanks all. Yeah, V R (I wasn't sure I remembered well, hence my interrogation mark). I've marked EdwardZuk's post as the answer, as he was the first one to give me the exact story reference. But thanks a lot all (also you are awesome, seriously).
