Yes an absolute bargain, just a shame the best one of the series is not included.
One of my absolute favorite point and click games on here (and I've played plenty) is a Whispered World. Beautiful graphics and animation, immersive world, wonderful story, memorable characters, and most importantly a great ending. An absolute gem.

The voice acting for the main character rubs some people the wrong way, but you get used to it over time and it really fits his character.
Here's my list of ones I love:

Monkey Island series
Day of the Tentacle
Full Throttle
Discworld
Discworld 2: Missing Presumed!?!
Discworld Noir
Grim Fandango
SImon the Sorcerer 1+2
Gabriel Knight 1
Book of Unwritten Tales
Gemini Rue
Beneath a Steel Sky
Blackwell series
Resonance
The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav
Deponia series
The Longest Journey series
Broken Sword series
Normality
Machinarium
Return to Mysterious Island
Sanitarium
Wallace & Gromit Grand Adventures
Return to Zork
Zork Nemesis
Zork: Grand Inquisitor
Toonstruck

I read that the English version of Black Mirror was criticized for the sub-par voice-acting and that even the Czech developer was disappointed by it. Does anyone know how good or bad it actually is and if anything changed in part 2 and 3 in that regard?

Elmofongo: snip
Like everyone said Beneath a Steel Sky is free and I'd say it's worth buying it for that price.

I'm interested in adventure games for the different settings and stories it can provide but to be honest, I suck at them. Sooner or later I end up on gamefaqs and considering the moon logic some of these games provide I am not ashamed. I mean, Gabriel Knight 3 made you put honey on cat hair to make a moustache, so you could impersonate a guy who does not have a moustache!

So maybe you should consider difficulty when making your choice. Gemini Rue is one I loved and despite people saying it's too easy, I felt like it was hard enough to make me feel good about solving a puzzle but not too hard to disrupt the flow of the game. It's funny how many puzzles are solved by shooting things, but it's good, it makes sense, why create a makeshift key when you can just shoot the lock?
OOH!

Just remembered 1.5 others -

I have no mouth and i need to scream

and (the 0.5)...

In cold blood

- i count it as a half as it isnt strictly a point and click (like one of the broken sword games - also made by my own city's revolutiuon software like beneath a steel sky). basically it had some action / pseudo stealth bits.
i only ever played it on the playstation and (happily) managed to complete the game - on talking with them in the pub i found out none of them managed that!
its a bit of a spoof on bond in a scifi setting and may be a good intro to the point and click adventure idea if B.A.S.S. doesnt instantly grab you!

The english version is better than czech, especially voice-acting(in czech version is only ONE actor who tolerably read his role, but others...no comment). I highly recommend part 1. I played part 2, but after 2 hours I quit and unninstal the game, because I missed the mysterious atmosphere and the story was...well, I haven't need for play further. However, the part 1 has really great atmosphere, gameplay and of course the story(game has closed end so part 2 doesn't relates exactly). Oh, and the voice acting is on higher level than others parts(but sadly says I play only czech version).

P.S.: Sorry for my english(especially grammar). I did use this last time 3,5 years ago.( I know, shame on me :-D )
my suggestion

Loom
The Last Express
Phantasmagoria
Monkey Island series
Gemini Rue
Beneath a Steel Sky
The Longest Journey series
Broken Sword series
Machinarium
Sanitarium

johnki: Primordia's coming out tomorrow and the demo/preview was pretty great.
Let me elaborate on this. The puzzles are hard but fair and don't require you to think the way the game designers were thinking or use a guide, the vistas are incredible, and the story is powerful in a way you rarely see in games.

And then the voice acting. Man, I have never seen such a great, well-rounded cast in a video game.
No love for Chains of Satinav?

Very nice game (although I am biased because of the TDE setting).

What I find especially great, and what you hardly see in those games, is different ways to solve a puzzle. I haven't really paid much attention to adventures in general, so maybe I'm just late for the party, but the option of solving puzzles in different, logical ways, is really something.
Great thread! After picking up Resonance and Machinarium in the 5-4-10 sale, I plan on splurging on adventure games during the Xmas sales, so these recs come in handy. :)
The Last Express

Really unique p&c adventure that focuses on replay-ability.
Primordia's coming in less than two hours.

Ah, that's interesting, I didn't know that, thanks. Puts the things about the alleged disappointment of the developer in a different perspective. The German version is supposed to have the best voiceovers and was critically acclaimed for that while the English version received mixed reviews, but maybe I'll just compare gameplay videos then and judge that by myself. Anyway, I haven't played part 1 yet and if you say the other parts are not as good, then I'll pass on the IndieGala offer and try to get my hands on the first game instead.
