Gabe said that in an interview... a long time ago... when the only games on Steam where Valve's games. There wasn't any "official" (i.e. not some Steam's forum mods quoting Gabe's original interview.) mention of that since.

I was speaking in jest, sir. I'm actually quite anal about backing up and archiving my collection. The last time I pirated a game I was 16, a decade and three years ago... it was Terminal Velocity if I'm not mistaken. Not a bad game but not really my thing; it was uninstalled within a few days. It wasn't just the game though, it was the lack of something tangible. I always take the DRM-free option, but I don't discount the merits of Steam.
