psamathos: I don't even own a CD player that isn't inside my computer.

yep same here.
If you can handle the woeful quality of any compressed music formats, go right ahead and ditch your CD's... Personally I can't do without them.
** PCM is the best coding/delivery method ever. **
Plus I gotta say, I like having the artwork (bigger than a fucking thumbnail pic that is) and booklet, lyrics and all the other stuff you get from a tangible disc based format like a CD album.

from the few dozen music cd's i have had i think i never read the lyrics.
I share your feeling with games. Those just have to be on my shelf collecting dust.

cioran: Lukasz does bring up a good point about CDs longevity - they're an inferior archival format.

pressed CDs last much longer than burned CDs... i know people who hopped on the format when it first came out and have well maintained CDs from the 80s that still play just fine

cogadh: Granted, the Sansa Clip is on the low end of MP3 players

it's actually well loved with the audiophiles over at head-fi for it's sound quality
as for my thoughts on CD... for music it is far from obsolete...
i have warmed up to digital distribution for software because none of the data of the game is lost... just the printed materials and some games don't even have printed materials.. i've recently bought one where the only thing in the box was a DVD-ROM disc in a sleeve
for music until the following conditions are met i will not buy my albums from digital distribution
1. lossless format... lossy is ok for internet radio and free songs but i won't buy it
2. i need to know how the audio was encoded... if sourced from a CD it must be ripped using EAC secure mode with a correctly set read offset and no errors
i'm not some nutjob audiophile who spends $400/ft for my cables i'm a practical audiophile who is quite happy spending a total of less than $400 for his computer listening setup (not including the computer itself)
